Great Bars of the World

Café Zurich, Placa de Catalunya, Barcelona. Less a great bar but, situated at the top of the Ramblas, it is a good / easy place to meet up with people.

An unnamed pulqueria in Amecameca, Mexico. Pulque, an elderly prostitue with neither knickers nor teeth and a urinal on the wall in the bar. :)

The Cafe-Tabac behind the square in St Vaast La Hougue, France - full of excellent Frenchmen necking pression bières, coffee, Pernod and Gauloise for breakfast before work  Run by a fantastic and formidable French lady

I can think of loads now

Apparently I was there too  I don't remember. I blame the $5 for any cocktail when the exchange rate made it £2.60 or something insane. There were many, with my final one ordered by colour.

I think I had fun anyway.

Nope, not quite. There were cocktails first by choice, then colour, finally mood. I believe I ordered "melancholy", you had "happy tinged with regret". They were both spot on.

Lazy Lizard, Caye Caulker, Belize:

A diving board, seats that are in the Caribbean so you can cool off and shots of 'Lizard Juice' on the house if you stick around long enough. I barely moved for a month.

Yep that sounds about par for the course. :D

Belikin Stout was my beer of choice for breakfast back then, too. :D

this is the only one i've been to so far and it's really not that great. it's in the most obvious place to gather and is really not that charming considering what else Barcelona has to offer. I wish I could remember the name of my favourite bar in Barcelona but I'm not even sure I ever knew it. I know where it is though,

El Garlochi in Seville is quite an experience, esp if you like Catholic tat:

Bar-Giralda.jpg

you must drink a 'sangre de cristo' (blood of christ) though - i think it has champagne, grenadine, and perhaps something stronger in it:

Bertie Ahern drinks in Fagans just round the corner. (not a recommendation)

He got fucked out of the Beaumount house lately, had to leg it out the back, the Drumcondra mafia isn't what it used to be, used to frequent the Goose (Pilot), sit on the bin talking to Blair and such back in the day but now he gets grief at funerals and potters about the Malahide estuary allotments. He's got nowhere to go and everyone hates him, he's a pathetic figure.

Inn of Olde, Quidi Vidi, Newfoundland

No particular opening hours. Run by the famous Linda, she of the obsession with Coronation Street and that mad part Irish accent the older Newfoundlanders have.

Brilliant, brilliant pub - somewhere to drink and maybe eat if the time is right/they can be bothered/there's enough of you.

To be honest if I knew any really great bars I wouldn't post them anywhere on the internet. But here's one from the past: the old Bebop bar in Pai, Thailand, before the airport was built when the town was still too far off the track for most sex tourists. It was an absolute classic travellers bar with live music, meaning also thai drinkers of an alternative persuasion. Fairly basic bamboo huts and tables (which were huge - one of my favourite things in a bar is big tables as it tends to make strangers become friends after only a few sangsoms). Then they moved the bar to a bigger crappy modern building and screwed it all. Which saved it from being screwed by the opening of the airport a few years later.

Edit: just seen that another classic travellers bar I had good memories of had to shut: http://www.gokunming.com/en/blog/item/1842/bird_bar_in_dali_to_shut_doors_after_10_years

Great thread.

Bar Turrisi - Castelmola, Sicily: Up a mountain but worth the visit. A special theme here!

O' Hanlon's - Mullaghbawn, South Armagh: Proper spit and sawdust. Don't go in here without a local.

Blanco Cerrillo - Seville: Cheap tapas, beer, locals.

Bar Ca'n Topa - Outside Soller, Majorca: Booze, jazz, food, and a fantastic setting high up in the Tramuntana mountains.
