When I was a kid I didn't think golliwogs were supposed to be people. I just thought it was a cartoon character or something. Then the Robertson's controversy started and the penny dropped.

Me too, it wasn't until reading an old Enid Blyton book where one of the Golliwog characters was called Nigger that I realised...
