At least they seemed to learn. But how do people manage to be conscious in 2023 and not aware that this is offensive? How?

I can't be sure of my aunt's thinking and I'm not arguing her case here, but the way she tries to justify golliwogs (and last time I saw stuff from her on Facebook about it she wasn't dropping the 'wog' bit even though it's a bit gross to even type it ) was that because she loved her doll as a child, and it's a doll representing a black person, then she can't be racist, right?
Whether she actually doesn't understand the type of representation is a racist caricature rather than an homage/appreciative thing is and probably shouldn't matter

Some of this stuff might be small c conservatives and '70s rebelliousness mixing in people with weird results?

When we was 16 or so The Otter and Fish bloke would allow a few of us in the back room for one pint of beer or two pints of shandy mid week. You had to be out after an hour or and if you messed about he'd throw you out anyway.
