I can't be sure of my aunt's thinking and I'm not arguing her case here, but the way she tries to justify golliwogs (and last time I saw stuff from her on Facebook about it she wasn't dropping the 'wog' bit even though it's a bit gross to even type it ) was that because she loved her doll as a child, and it's a doll representing a black person, then she can't be racist, right?
Whether she actually doesn't understand the type of representation is a racist caricature rather than an homage/appreciative thing is and probably shouldn't matter
Some of this stuff might be small c conservatives and '70s rebelliousness mixing in people with weird results?
