Germany v Argentina (Final) Sunday 13th July 2014

Given that these sort of things usually flow up (Celts -> England; England -> Germany, Argentina; Dutch -> Germany), who do Germany love to beat?! Or are they just (literally) above it all? ;)

Italy?

Depends - it's a big country. Holland is a big game but the Germans aren't nearly as vile about it as the Dutch. The Dutch only really started getting narky after 1974 anyway.

And don't make the mistake of thinking Argentina don't love beating England

Probably Italy, yeah. They've never beaten Italy in a competitive game.
I did not know that. Alright, that's gotta build some resentment.

Aw, do they? Bless 'em :D I thought that was a pretty one-sided thing, but I guess that's where non-football stuff comes in (as if that wasn't the case with us and Germany before '90 and '96...).

Anyway, I'm off to my friend's house to watch this so won't be on here during the match. Have a good one everyone

Marca's tactical analysis of this was interesting. They think the game is going to be a bit of a slog. Argentina will let Germany have the ball so they don't get to counter-attack they way they did against Germany. They will have 6 players focused on defending deep and when they get the ball, they will give the ball to Messi to drive it forward.

I hope for goals but I'm scared of a 1990 affair.

Everybody loves beating England;)

Argentina and Scotland care about beating England more than anyone else I think. I don't think it's a match that works Spaniards up much. Italians only as much as any other relatively big team. The French don't have a special football rivalry with us and Brazilians don't feel any different about beating us from any other team. England vs. Germany is a load of one-sided bell-endery in which we disgrace ourselves.

Yeah. Argentina and Scotland. Oh, and Wales if we want to extend it to basically non-footballing countries.

Watching the build up now. Helicopter shots of the Maracana, Messi walking into the stadium. Over the past four years, on many occasions I've thought that club football has overtaken international football, that the World Cup is losing some of its significance and it's all about the Champions League now. After all, those club sides could probably beat the best national squads now couldn't they? Not like the old days when Brazil or Holland in their pomp would probably have battered an Inter Milan or whoever.

Now, as we get ready for Germany vs. Argentina at arguably the most iconic football stadium there is after an extraordinary month of football, I realise that this is what it's all about. It's still the big one.

given that clubs train together at least 40 weeks of the year it would be a surprise if international squads could beat the likes of eg bayern munich or barcelona, after perhaps four to six weeks training together.

Do you not think it might have been true 30 or 40 years ago? Club sides generally had less internationals per side in them. They weren't all world XI's like they are now. Barça's and Madrid's squads now are obscene.

I fear for a dull game where Argentina stick 11 behind the ball and hope for a lucky break.

I hope I'm wrong.

The dutch I've spoken to about it tend to mention 1940 as the tipping point
