Come on Argentina !! i think Germany will probably win but I'll get £5 as I backed you @4/1 at the start of the tournament.. hopefully a wise £1 investment

My considered sporting opinion: Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I am admittedly beside myself with excitement. Flying to Germany tomorrow, should make it home with an hour to spare before kick-off.

3-0 would be nice I guess, but I fear it's gonna be a lot closer and a lot of time spent with heart in mouth! We shall see.

Third time the Germans have met Argentina in the final. 1986 in Mexico City was a decent game - Diego Maradona orchestrating a 3-2 victory for Argentina. Jose Luis Brown, Jorge Valdano & Jorge Burruchaga with Karl-Heinz Rumminegge & Rudi Voller replying for West Germany. Four years later, the worst ever World Cup was crowned by the worst ever final, a pretty unloveable West German side managing to look like the fluffy option next to a horrible Argentinian side with Dirty Diego cheerleading them to two sendings off and defeat to an Andreas Brehme penalty.

This time I reckon Argentina will do it. Dunno why other than that they would love to win it in Rio - probably even more than they loved winning it in Buenos Aires :D

Excellent news sure to give Germany a boost ahead of the final: somebody has finally recorded Simon Price's 'Mertesacker Emptiness', the lyrics to which he penned during the 2010 tournament.

This is the tenth final between a European team and a South American one. Europe have only won two of the previous 10 encounters, France in 1998 and West Germany in 1990. Of the last 5, it's 3-2 to the South Americans.

Another interesting/dull fact that the commentators may mention is that today is the 84th anniversary of the first ever World Cup match.

The anti-Brazil stuff is going too far now I think. It would have brought so much happiness to so many people in a way that a World Cup win for other countries simply can't. The vast majority 200 million people who love football in a way no-one else does, seeing their team win in their home country, would have been caue for the biggest party mankind has ever seen. Argentines spent decades being smug and looking down on Brazilians, considering themselves to be "European" and "not really South American". Anyone who wants to see the most arrogant country in Latin America rubbing it in to their historically poorer neighbours might want to reconsider.

Be pissed off at FIFA for their disgusting corruption and disregard for host nation's well-being, be angry at the Brazilian governments capituation to FIFA demands, support another underdog if you must, support the protests as I do, but give Brazilians a break as well. A better bunch of people you'll never meet, not in my experience at least, and we should be grateful, not hostile, to the fact that a developing country rather than a rich one has been the greatest nation in the history of the sport.

Come on Germany.

Why do the news and commentators keep referring to Messi as "arguably the best player of his generation"? Surely it's indisputable?

I want Argentina to win now, I've decided. I think Messi deserves a winners medal for soldiering on despite being hindered by half of Man City.

Fuck off, Fez. It's Stewart Fucking Downing and frankly I'll deck any cunt that says otherwise.
I'm a big fan of Downing. Only from when he was good (at boro) of course. He's shite now.

Leaving boro is bad for players. They never learn.

RIP Adam Johnson

3-0 to Germany seems to be the general consensus here in Deutschland. I can hardly imagine the atmosphere if Germany dont win this bloody thing.

It just occurred to me that this is a final between two of England's historical footballing foes, neither of whom probably give much of a toss about England :D

Think I'll be rooting for Germany - have a couple of links to the country but also it's just supporting the European team, innit ;)

Who's the greatest player in the world THIS WEEK though? The accelerated news cycle insists that this is up for continual debate, not once ever 2 years or so as it would be in a sane world or anytime pre-2002. TGPITW has been Suárez, Messi, Ronaldo at various points in the past 12 months and it only takes one overhead kick from Rooney to generate half a dozen articles arguing his case. It could be Neymar or Arjen Robben if either of them have three good league games in October, or it could be James Rodriguez by Christmas.

Who's the best right now?
Right now?
Well? Tell me. Who is it?
