Think it's interesting that both of these teams seem to have abandoned the idea that controlling the ball the majority of the time is important.
Remember the observation made by Graham Taylor that most goals are scored with only 4 passes? They look like they've decided that most goals are scored within 30 seconds of winning the ball back.
They defend deep, and whoever happens to win the ball back brings it forward at pace, and set players rush forward to support them.
Both England and Chile had more possession in the respective Last 16 games, but still shipped 7 goals between them. Did England adapt to passing football just as it was becoming outdated?
