DHL Boeing 757-200 Freighter Door Opens Mid-Flight
A cargo door on a DHL Boeing 757 opened mid-flight yesterday. The aircraft was performing a German route between Leipzig/Halle Airport and Frankfurt am Main Airport when the unexpected issue occurred.

The crew on the DHL Boeing 757 had to take swift action after noticing an anomaly during the flight.

According to The Aviation Herald, the Boeing 757-200 freighter involved in the matter holds registration number G-DHKZ. It was conducting flight QY-126, climbing out of Leipzig’s runway 26L when the crew on board the unit stopped its climb at approximately 5,300 feet mean sea level (MSL). The reason for this stop was due to the plane’s cargo door fully opening.

As a result of the problem, airframe parts fell near the Schkopau coal power plant. This site can be found approximately 10 NM west from the departing airport.

The plane returned to Leipzig, landing in the opposite direction to its takeoff. It touched down at the airport on the runway at 05:47 local time, just 15 minutes after it initially departed. The aircraft stayed on the runway for approximately 40 minutes before being shifted to the apron.

If there's a rapid resumption of mass air travel at some point... is that going to be a dangerous time to fly because all the pilots will have forgotten how to do it?

Not to mention all the planes sat around at remote airfields, just rotting away.

"It went so low that it made a hell of a din, I then looked up and saw the second aircraft," the village's mayor told local news outlet France Bleu (in French).
"It was so low that I said to myself: it went under the power lines," Benoît Gouin, who was driving at the time, said.
Further down the road, he says he came across sectioned electric cables hanging on the ground: "One of the planes hit the line and cut it. I immediately called the emergency services and the Enedis [electricity company] team."

The fall of the cables caused a fire which was quickly brought under control, La Provence newspaper reports.

Good. I once drove to Le Castellet, London to Folkestone to Lyon, to Grenoble, three hours of mountain roads later I arrived. Turns out there are two Le Castellets in Provence, I was due at the other one, another three fucking hours away, yet only three from bleedin’ Lyon that I had passed five hours earlier...

OK I haven't gone deep into checking this out and not sure if related or whatever but more bits of planes seem to be falling off.

Leipzig - Frankfurt on a G reg. One to watch

That's the famous Gutersloh incident. The MP had a brain snap and thought the jet was not going to take off even though nothing was wrong. He banged out and both his eyes came out of their sockets. The medics got them back in but he always claimed that he was never as good at snooker again. He obviously wasn't cut out for the Harrier so they sent him off the to the Reds where he did quite well. The peak of his career came later when he did my 747 line check at Cathay.

I did not know that!

The National Gendarmerie (French: Gendarmerie nationale [ʒɑ̃daʁməʁi nɑsjɔnal]) is one of two national police forces of France, along with the National Police. It is a branch of the French Armed Forces placed under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Interior—with additional duties to the Ministry of Defense. Its area of responsibility includes smaller towns, rural and suburban areas, while the Police Nationale, a civilian force, is in charge of cities and their centres. Because of its military status, the Gendarmerie also fulfills a range of military and defense missions.
"Gendarme" translates literally as "man at arms", I learned quite recently. But yes, they're very much a military force. France does have a lot of different police services.

ETA as I note A380 explained in much more detail only a couple of posts after the one I responded to

For the first time in ages, the prospect of overseas holidays and weekend breakes now seems tangible and near. The skies over Britain will roar with the sound of jet engines once more soon enough :)

Not booking anything yet but in the coming weeks I'm going to break the Easyjet website :D

I wouldn't get your hopes up too much yet. There was a conspicuous lack of info about foreign travel given yesterday.

I’d be extraordinarily surprised if summer 2021 in most of Europe is going to be any worse than summer 2020, infection levels-wise at least. If one was allowed to enjoy a holiday to Spain in August last year and even visit restaurants and shops, there’s no way imo that’s not going to be the case this year, what with the vaccine and all.

Even if I had to still isolate at home when I got back home, that’s not going to stop me or millions of others from travelling abroad on holiday. Admittedly weekend breaks are probably not worth doing quite yet...
