First Official Portrait of Kate Middleton

If you want to blame anyone .. blame the monarchy itself.
That's the heart of the whole thing. It wasn't that a woman with a serious illness had to keep it quiet to protect her kids. It was the institution that deployed her life and that of her kids as a an ideological construct, tied into the 24/7 media cycle.

And whilst her kids didn't buy into this, she did. Plus she did this knowing that the construct had actually killed the woman who would have been her mother in law. Cancer is a horrible thing, I've got it and I'm about to go and see my uncle who has 12 months to live. But this story isn't really about how horrible cancer is. It's about an institution that even puts demands on those members who are seriously ill.

You have completely misunderstood my post.

I specifically wrote that many many people have cancer and suffer in silence . I actually wrote that they are real heroes.

I have zero investment in the monarchy...I'm Irish..and I have zero investment in the "Crown" (..Know your enemy etc etc....)
I do see how fucked up the current set up is and I can see that the monarchy (small m) is shit without someone like her.

Maybe read a bit better?
You're invested in this thread certainly as you have the most posts on it currently

Iwish

exactly: some posters here should be ashamed of themselves: I dont like the Royals either but some common decency wouldnt go amiss
Yes..well... the people starving in Gaza and The West Bank deserve some commom decency shown them too. I dont see the Monarchy glowing in any way in that department. They've remained quite silent apart from a throwaway comment by William about too many being dead.

Minimum wage for a job that isn't paid at minimum wage anywhere else in London is pretty unreasonable! How rich are the royal family and they don't even want to pay living wage?
With accommodation, food and utilities on top of the wage, like they corrected, it goes way above minimum wage. Tied accommodation definitely has its drawbacks, but financially that's worth at least another £12k. Same with the Richmond one, which makes me suspect the part about "no experience necessary" can't be true.

You’ve got way too invested in this stupid soap opera and care too much about the characters. When you talk about the saintly Kate, you sound frankly deranged, like the sort of person who collects plates with pictures of their favourite royal. I do get that people like you may ultimately be helpful to the republican cause, but no good comes of fetishising supposed outsiders in that sorry clan.
Aladdin is neither deranged, nor a monarchist.

Live in accommodation offset about £10 a day, employers can't pretend they're generously paying more because room and board is worth so much. Live-in staff are for the employer's convenience, not because they kindly want to help people.

Anyway, the point is that it's absolute dogshit wages paid to people working in a literal palace, when housekeepers should be earning £35-45k.

The article said the accommodation is actually on top of the wage. I mean, they could be lying, but that's what they said the pay situation is.

I never said the employers were doing this to be kind. Not sure why you're pretending I said something that stupid. It's just disingenuous to claim it's minimum wage when it does come with a benefit worth several grand more. It still should be more IMO, but it's really not minimum wage.

Minimum wage plus accommodation which is worth £10 a day is still barely above minimum wage.

Never said she was a monarchist.

That particular post offered a very good imitation of one of those weird anti-monarchy nutjobs with a mawkish reverence for troubled princesses of Wales.

I will accept her explanation that she posted it by accident.

I don’t really see why it matters if we decide the accommodation is worth £500 or £5000 or £50k - they’re still paying £20k less than other employers in London for no other reason than they can get away with it.

Yeah it is, employers aren’t allowed to just make up the “worth” of accommodation like landlords are.

No. The ten poundish a day is what they'd be allowed to deduct (and they claim they're not). But that doesn't mean that the accommodation plus utilities and food is actually "worth" that amount. For some live-in jobs, like those shared caravans on farms, it's probably not even worth that, but for this job it's worth a lot more, even with the caveat of the usual drawbacks of tied accommodation.

A tenner a day is the legal offset, a completely different thing to how much the perq is actually worth, which is what we were talking about.

Because it's better to criticise them for what they're actually doing, ie exactly what you say there, rather than make shit up and then criticise them for the made-up stuff.

I totally disagree with you about the worth of live in then. A minimum wage job doesn’t become not minimum wage because it’s live-in.

I'm sure that Sali Hughes had this column prepared long before the news broke, but still:

I know they haven’t.
