F1 2021

Well, Red Bull are looking imperious after FP2 with Ferrari close behind.

Mercedes way down the rankings. If this is how qualifying ends up, no amount of overcut or undercut is going to stop Mercedes losing a bucket-load of points to their opposition.

FP2 Perez fronts Red Bull one-two, Hamilton demoralised, Leclerc hits barrier

Sergio Perez underlined his growing confidence at Red Bull by finishing quickest in a second practice session for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in which Lewis Hamilton again expressed frustration. On the low-fuel, soft-tyre runs around the Baku City Circuit, Perez finished quickest by 0.101secs ahead of team-mate Max Verstappen with a lap of one minute 42.115s, although it was the Dutchman who was fastest in the first two sectors. Verstappen did complain, however, about his RB16B being "night and day" different, primarily due to a lack of balance at the front, compared to what he had experienced in FP1 at the end of which he was quickest. Red Bull, though, were also later quickest on the longer runs during the second half of the session.

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, fresh from his confidence-boosting second place in Monaco, was third on the timesheet, finishing 0.128s behind Perez. Team-mate Charles Leclerc, second fastest behind Verstappen in FP1, blotted his FP2 copybook by running into a TecPro barrier at turn 15 after a lock-up, and after setting the fastest first sector at that time. The shunt forced Leclerc back to the pits for a new front wing and led to a short VSC period while it was recovered, leaving the Monégasque a third of a second adrift in fourth.

As for Mercedes, as occurred around Monaco, it was another practice session to leave the reigning champions facing a long debrief as to its latest issues. At one stage, a clearly demoralised Hamilton said over the radio: "I'm not going to go any faster. I don't know where the time is." Hamilton finished the session a second adrift in 11th place, with team-mate Valtteri Bottas a further second down in 16th. Ahead of Hamilton in the top 10 beyond the Red Bull and Ferrari pair were AlphaTauri duo Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda in fifth and 10th, separated by six-tenths of a second. Sandwiched in between were Alpine team-mates Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon in sixth and ninth, with just over three-tenths of a second the difference, while Alfa Romeo's Antonio Giovinazzi and McLaren's Lando Norris were seventh and eighth quickest. Giovinazzi concluded the session with the fastest sector three time.

McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo, who had performed strongly in first practice, was down in 13th, 1.183s adrift, with Aston Martin's Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel over half-a-second back in 14th and 15th. Nicholas Latifi brought up the rear in his Williams, bringing out the red flags 12-and-a-half minutes into the session after his engine died on the short straight after turn 15. Williams reported the engine simply overheated and went into shutdown protection mode.

I see the Singapore GP (1 - 3 October) is called off.

Safety and logistics concerns caused by Covid.
I think the Japanese GP is still on this year, 10th Oct and the USA is 24th Oct, maybe they'll replace the Singapore GP with a race in the USA on the weekend of the 17th october. The problem with that would be that Maxico is the 31st Oct, 1 week later than the USA GP and Brazil is 7th Nov, so they1d have to have 5 races back to back and I can't see teams going for that. There is a gap afer Brazil and one after the Australian race, but it will be hard to replace the Singapore race.

FP3: Gasly leads Perez in final Azerbaijan GP practice

AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly came from nowhere to comfortably head Free Practice 3 from the Red Bull of Sergio Perez, as Lewis Hamilton brought some hope to Mercedes, going third after their tough Friday. But the big story of the session was Red Bull’s Max Verstappen slewing painfully into the wall at Turn 15 midway through the session, bringing out a red flag. Verstappen was pushing on hard tyres when he failed to slow sufficiently for Turn 15, sliding into the wall in a similar way to Charles Leclerc in FP2 yesterday. Verstappen was unable to get the car into reverse and was forced to hop out, bringing out a red flag as the RB16B was recovered Verstappen missing out on the final 35 minutes of running, with Red Bull hoping that his car will require minimal work to get it ready for qualifying.

That left AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly to lead the session by 0.344s from the second Red Bull of Sergio Perez the Frenchman showing a fine turn of pace, as he stopped the clocks at 1m 42.251s, around a tenth slower than Perez’s fastest FP2 time from yesterday. Hamilton spent much of the session mired down in P17, but would have been relieved to go P3 with a few minutes of the session remaining although Mercedes estimated that his lap, which was 0.446s slower than Gasly’s, had benefited to the tune of six-tenths from a tow from Perez. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz lined up fourth and fifth for Ferrari, ahead of the leading McLaren of Lando Norris in sixth. Fernando Alonso maintained his form from FP2 to take seventh, ahead of the second AlphaTauri of Yuki Tsunoda, the second Alpine of Esteban Ocon and the McLaren of 2017 Baku winner Daniel Ricciardo, who was 1.306s off the ultimate pace.

That top 10 order may have been skewed after Williams’ George Russell pulled up with an issue on his FW43B while many were on their qualifying simulation runs, Russell ending up 18th. Nonetheless, it was Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel who was 11th Vettel sliding into the escape road at Turn 15 on his first flying lap with his team mate Lance Stroll 12th ahead of the second Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas, who was still unable to get on the pace of his team mate this weekend. Kimi Raikkonen was 14th, ahead of Verstappen, who wound up classified 15th after his hard tyre run. Nicholas Latifi overcame an off at Turn 3 to take 16th, ahead of Antonio Giovinazzi, Russell and the two Haas cars of Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin, both cars over 3s off the ultimate pace, with Mazepin having clouted the Turn 15 wall for good measure.

So, with Verstappen on the back foot, can the Dutchman recover in time to go for pole when qualifying gets under way at 1600 local time? Join us on F1.com to find out.

Its interesting to see another street track with loads of empty balconies, this could be a good race to go and watch by renting someones balcony for less cost than a few tickets

We are back in Lockdown here so no bars, shops or restaurants open over the next couple of weekends  I think they can open week days but only for lunch and must close at 4pm

I think we are in the top 3 worst States in Brazil
