England @ Euro 2016

Occurred to me last night: even if England no longer have a history of folk songs to call upon on the terraces we've got a shitload of classic, recognisable pop songs that could be used. One example: Heroes (Bowie). Thematically perfect, and the melody is accessible enough that it wouldn't sound out of place.

Just not fucking Great Escape and GSTQ, again.

Please.

Please :(

Milner's a very useful, dependable player, and allows the 'star' players to do their thing while keeping the play ticking over.
Agree, and I wouldn't have a problem with him being incorporated in the starting XI, or coming on with 20-30 minutes to go if the game was slipping away from us and we were struggling, but that was a dismal substitution on Saturday bringing him on in the 87th minute to replace an out and out attacking player. Not surprising he looked off the pace in the build up to the equaliser. Negative tactical substitutions at that stage of the game are always a bad idea in my book; if Sterling was spent I'd rather have seen Sturridge or Vardy replace him. Didn't we do something similar in the opening game of Euro 2004 against France with Ledley King (a fine centre back) coming on to play in midfield, and managed to turn a 1-0 lead into a 1-2 defeat? Germany and Italy were both 1-0 up going into stoppage time of their opening match too, and both won 2-0.

If there's reason to deport them, there's reason also to put them in prison like the 6 english fans, or is that something the french prosecutors only reserve for the English?

I'm waiting for the French police to arrest the one's responsible for putting the Portsmouth fan in a coma. Deporting them would be letting them off.

Here's hoping that for the next few days we only have the technical aspects of the upcoming matches to talk about on here and not all this disfunctional policing and fans being attacked.

Yeah, would probably agree it wasn't the best use of him there. As someone else said, surely bring on another pacey player (as you say, Vardy or Sturridge, perhaps) to stretch Russia and stop them pressing too far forward? Give 'em something to think about and not relax.

Yep I don't disagree with any of that.

The Russian team has also got a suspended disqualification. If they have any more crowd trouble inside the stadium at the next matches, they are out.

In the event of a disqualification from the tournament, Group B could be thrown into turmoil due to Article 27 of Uefa’s regulations, which states: “If an association is disqualified during the competition, the results of all of its matches are declared null and void, and the points awarded forfeited.”

I'd say this (assuming nothing has been lost in translation) is reason alone to throw Russia out right now:
Euro 2016: Senior Russian football official tells violent fans: keep it up!

I think I heard a bit of Three Lions on Saturday in the crowd, and Swing Low, which I don't think I've ever heard at football before.

Kane is not a traditional CF imo. Hes at his most dangerous when running at people, as is Vardy. I don't want to see either stuck in the middle as box players. Give them space to run with the ball at defenders.
I'd not say he isn't a 'traditional' CF - but he's much more Sheringham than Shearer. I've been describing him as Teddy MKII on Spurs sites for about 5 years. I agree with your general jist though.

To be fair, Löw substituted attacker Götze with defensive midfielder Schweinsteiger as well, to help holding the 1-0 lead. But Schweinsteiger didn't listen to what Löw said and scored a goal instead.

So apparently the last time England won a match in a major tournament by more than one goal was 10 years ago at WC 2006, against Trinidad & Tobago.

Of course I think you'll find winning by more than the single goal required for victory is simply crass and unsporting.

He's just resting him as Wilshere is a good option and you'll want key players fresh for knockout rounds should we get there. And that's odds on tho of course not a given. Fine with it.

It's a bit daft to start resting players when they haven't really got going yet

no, he's a top manager until england go home early at which point he can be vilified

I don't think anybody has said he's a top manager. He's already made some bizarre decisions and the first two games have been unimpressive, like when he took us to the World Cup, if we don't do anything at this tournament he will be rightly vilified for giving us two uninspired tournament appearances

never mind that, if he doesn't do well he'll find a p45 awaiting him on his doormat
