Ignoring all this toss about the violence, I thought it was a really encouraging performance from England, Rooney in midfield worked a treat and they showed enough to suggest they can make a real go of the tournament. The areas where we were lacking are ones we have options that can put it right.

Loathe though I am to admit it - as I was sick to the back teeth of him being shoe-horned into a team on reputation rather than merit - I agree. His top class CF days are way behind him, but he filled that midfield role with the maturity and composure you'd expect of someone with his experience. If the rest of the team weren't so young/new I might be less convinced, but as it is the spot's all his.
Rooney was brilliant in midfield. I think that's the most impressive he's ever been in a tournament

Rooney was never shoe-horned into the team on reputation. On the contrary he has often been moved around to accommodate others. Truth is, had he been playing up-front it is very likely England would have scored more than one. After all not only has he scored 5 in the last 8 games prior to the Russian game, he is responsible for 66 per cent of the 79 goals scored by the entire squad. Kane is either shagged out or not the player people think he is. Either way if he plays like that against Wales, he will be hauled off. What then?
