England at the World Cup 2018

One of the online shoppers at work, massive Spurs fan, is getting a World Cup tattoo if England win.

So come on England, do it for Greg's tattoo!!

I have only just discovered that England didn’t win a quarter final against Colombia, but a “round of 16” match, apparently.

That’s yielded a lot of excitement, all things considered, ay? Three more soccer matches, and ime soccer results appears to be a pretty arbitrary thing. Particularly for England.

Good luck, etc, obvs. It all seems a bit excessive, tho. As an outsider.

So, having watched Belgium beat Brazil, any chance of the country calming the fuck down and accepting we'll get as far as we get (because we ain't gonna win it) and enjoy the ride?

No. Thought not.
Best to just pack up then. Head home and not bother eh?

I doubt they will but they MIGHT make the final which is a hell of an achievement. To be honest (joking 'coming home' aside) most people wanted a good run and no nonsense from the team/management/fans.

A bit of hope is no bad thing :)

It's the going, not the getting there, that matters

it's still coming home on the way though

Well you can if you want. For myself, I specifically put that bit in about 'enjoying the ride'. Which I reckon you (I, we, they) have a lot more chance of doing without the ridiculous baggage of expectation around our necks.

The WC wouldn't be half as fun if you didn't think you might win it, even when you know you won't. I.e. thinking (pretending?) there's an outside chance is half the fun.

Interesting comment from the Morning Star 60 years ago . Its from an article on theatres and the author might not be quite up to speed

I don’t expect the British team to win the World Cup. Certainly not if they’re playing soccer.

‘Win the World Cup at soccer’ can’t even be grammatically correct surely?
