Donkey Jacket?

Wilson

most misunderstood
Noone wears these anymore.

I remember the label on the inside bearing the legend "Made by British Workers for British Workers"

last time i saw one was in the mid ninties worn by a twattish bloke who had sewn badges from class war and suchlike on it

So who still has one? :D

It doesn't actually look like one as I remember them though.

did i neglect to mention that i want you to dig them out and photograph yourself wearing them

its not one, that was a very expensive overcoat in the latest style that his wife bought for him :D

I used to find them really sexy on blokes (apart from Michael Foot, I hasten to add).

My dad had one. He used to wear it when he went to work, packing fibreglass. When I grew up, he handed it down to me and I used to wear it when I went to work - as a student at my local college.

I hadn't seen one for decades until I went to Middlesbrough a couple of years ago and saw two different old geezers wearing them

That's because what Michael Foot was wearing wasn't a donkey jacket.
I remember at the time knowing the difference. It was all about any old reason to bash Foot, though.

What he was wearing was a duffle coat. The reason militarists disliked that was the association with Aldermaston CND marches. But donkey jacket was the phrase used because those were working class, and for work, and therefore a 'disrespectful' thing to wear on the occasion.

It's great that we're a classless society now, though. ;)

I used to have one. Had a strip of shiny material along the shoulders I think - was 18 at the time so memory a tad vague

I loved that coat though

Unortunately I cant find a pic of one with NCB written across the orange bit.

heh - mine had something written on it too, but can't remember what. enough evidence for me to tear it off I seem to recall :)

No HiAsl - I didn't work with your dad. I was just a scruffy little twat :)

I lived in mine when I was about 18, 19 or so.

I had an Echo And The Bunnymen-style greatcoat at one point, too. That was for special occasions.

I had an ankle length dark brown leather coat as well, with a belt, that I scavenged out of a skip at Rainhill tip

Ace coat, felt like Clink in that and my also-scavenged cowboy hat

I may have one in the darkest recesses of a cupboard somewhere. Iirc(27yrs ago) it was skinheads and rude boys tended to wear them(other than workies of course)

Mine was just black. I might have to have a look.

When i was 15 i used to wear my dads donkey jacket a lot. I bought some spray paint and sprayed a swastika on it one day (i was a stupid gothy/punky twat ) and forgot to tell him. He went to work and was getting weird looks on the bus. He went off his fuckin head at me for that :(

:D:D

I had monkey boots when I was about 2 or 5 or 10 or something. They were brilliant, I loved them so much.

The whole business of Michael Foot's so called 'Donkey Jacket' was made up by the press. It was in fact an expensive coat bought I think I remember from a Saville Row tailor. It did not have a belt and because Michael Foot had a stoop it did not look smart enough for some random journalist who made up a sneering story about it.

Perhaps real Donkey Jackets should make a comeback. Or maybe they already did but I haven't noticed. Duffle coats came back I seem to remember, but I don't know if they caught on.

If I had been your dad, I would have seen to it that you got a decent burial before owning up to the murder.

What, the boot polish? But how else could I keep them so lovely and shiny?
You know what i mean!

Everyone had moneky boots when i was a nipper. Yeh so my mum was poor, thats no excuse! If only childline was available during the 70's, i'd have been on that phone to Esther fuckin Rantzen as soon as mum said "no ya can't have them" :(

Can someone please post a picture of monkey boots coz I think it depends on where you are in the country as to what you think they are.
I'm sure baseball boots were monkey boots where I was.
