Donald Trump - MAGAtwat news and discussion

I don't fully understand the US legal system but given that this was tried under NY law, not federal, the supreme court is out. I think that's why his lawyers wanted it tried out of state.

How can anything constitutional be engaged in such a low-level crime, though?

They take up cases that they choose based upon it touching on constitutional issues. A recent case involved a football coach giving prayers before a game in Texas. No crime there at all, just a first amendment issue that needed clarification. This case involves a former President. Anything involving someone that high up in the government, will bring up issues they might be interested in.

The DA and his team will have done a lot of thinking on this before it all. He's going to jail.

And the fact he has been brought down by a n****r. He also used that word to describe Lennox Lewis, behind the scenes on his show, is brilliant.

Racist. Sexist. Cunt.

Ron Kuby, a veteran New York criminal defense lawyer, took a different view.

“Judge Merchan is known for being a harsh sentencer when it comes to white-collar crimes committed by people who have wealth and privilege and power,” Kuby said.

Kuby added that he believes “it is substantially likely Judge Merchan will sentence Trump to jail or prison time,” despite the logistical and practical complications that locking up a person with Secret Service protection would entail.

I used to work with a white collar criminal from NY. He was taking private jets to Eastern Europe with bags of us dollars. Got three years but white collar guys get very nice facilities. Trump won't be getting shanked in the showers.

This press conference is hilarious.

He's just repeated the line about 'Mental institutions' and 'insane asylums' with respect to illegal immigration. Totally bonkers.

ETA now he's oging on about a guy with a machete in McDonalds. Er, OK.

Here we go again, immigration.... terrorists, languages 'unknown', CHINA, propane stoves!

This is just rallying now. Bloomberg have cut away. I think Sky news should do the same.

People are taking over our luxury hotels!

good find.
he was william kunstler's understudy, basically.

Here's a marginally less deranged MAGA take on the trial. The author is Charles Lipson, the Peter B. Ritzma Professor of Political Science Emeritus at the University of Chicago, where he founded the programme on International Politics, Economics, and Security.

snippage:
The indictment and trial on a thin charge, the gagging of a presidential candidate in the middle of a campaign, and the judge’s consistently biased rulings amount to deliberate judicial interference in the 2024 election.

The process was led by a Manhattan district attorney, Alvin Bragg, who ran on the campaign platform of going after Donald Trump. Not going after a crime. Going after a person. That fundamentally contradicts the basic principles of Anglo-American law and justice.

Spectator, freed from paywall.
