David Davis resigns as MP over civil liberties

It was very disconcerting to hear him on the radio yesterday speaking as the Tory shadow Home Secretary and agreeing with a lot of what he said. Just shows what a bunch of repressive wankers now rule over us.

His by-election campaign would be "personal and not backed by the full resources of the Conservative Party", the source added.

Sources say Mr Davis wants to fight a by-election on the 42-day issue.

what, against his party?

WTF?

He's going to fight the by-election on civil liberties and the lib-dems have said they won't stand against him! So it's Labour vs Conservative - a straight fight on civil liberties ...

Yeah, I pretty much agreed with everything he just said. -Very disconcerting.

Well ... it's probably one of the most admirable things an MP has done in the last 2 days ...

... so ... err ... vote Conservative ... on this anyway ... :hmm:  W.T.F.

It may well be a ploy but according to World at One he isn't going to be getting the official backing of the tory party but if he wins in a straight 'civil liberties' fight and wins then it reflects well on the tories and damages NL more. If he loses then he was standing without sanction and the shit doesn't stick so much.

Good on him though. Shame it had to be a tory who has done this.

The Tories couldn't possibly endorse this kind of manoeuvre publicly, just as Castro had to publicly disown Guevara when he went off on his adventures. Doesn't mean it hasn't been agreed.

Nothing admirable about it, its a very cynical (and damned clever) political tactic.
Could lose his seat if the voters don't like what he's done. Big risk for him personally, especially as the rest of the party aren't behind him it seems.

Know what, it doesn't matter. We are sliding towards totalitarianism at the moment, and whatever the motives, this is an attempt to halt that slide.

No it isnt, ffs this is David Davies were talking about :D

Can't you admire that level of politicking and commitment.? He may be a tory cunt, but wow!

Oh aye, its a machiavellian masterstroke.

No risk at all to him - he knows he cant lose.

Dont be naive - the party is completely behind him, read the cleverly worded formulation "personal and not backed by the full resources of the Conservative Party",

If NL have any brain cells remaining (which is doubtful) they will not contest this by-election - they would be on an absolute hiding to nothing, and it would prevent, or at least minimize the exposure of, Davies getting his message across (thanks to the media). Brown is however stupid enough to give it a go, so you never know.

Good luck to him though, he, Grieve, the Libs and the Labour rebels overwhelmingly won the debate last night but lost because of fuckwittery amongst more than 300 Labour MPs.

.
Whatever his personal beliefs, if he ever gets into power he will have to act in a way consistent with this stand. As I said, we are losing civil liberties almost daily at the moment. Other issues such as public services and taxation will have to be won separately - imo this is actually more important at the moment.

Yup, hats of to them, very clever move.

Can Brown survive another kicking at the polls?

I dont think they are behind him. Remind me again why Dave wants his #1 rival in the party becoming a national hero?
