Critiquing Oasis

I loved King Bee :(
Great gaff . I knew Les , the owner, for years as he used to play for teams in the same league as ours. I sold him the justified Ancients/KLFs first album the one that was withdrawn and a Chameleons 7 inch of In Shreds .

Noels guitar solos seem particularly crap ... can any guitarists confirm?

*ive checked a couple of tracks again to see what Oasis are like - I cant get my head around what it is even. They're not like other bands, there is that. Going back to the OP its not really rock in the way i understand /feel it

I think Oasis songs are of the character "we have something to say and we're going to say it in an anthemic sing-a-long sort of way." Complaining about the quality of the music is something of quibble, it's alright fwiw. It's just I'm not interested in what they've got to say and I'm too alienated to want to sing a long.

I'm not much of a guitarist, but I've just listening to a random Oasis song Listen Up just to see what I make of the solo. I will say it's a dull guitar solo. On the plus side he gets a good tone/timbre. He plays long slow notes, which I like as well. But there is no rhythmical or dynamic variation. It's way back in the mix and just adds a little to the overall racket, but there's nothing expressive or interesting about it.

I've forgotten how much I hate Oasis and how much that hate is actually quite irrational. The music isn't bad, just dull. But apart from that I find them obnoxious. I feel they're trying to speak to me on a personal level and I just want them to fuck off.

Bog standard pentatonic blues stuff. Which I don't have a problem with in itself, Marc Bolan never played much else. It's the endless mid-tempo stodginess, the lack of dynamics or movement, the dreary nyeeah nyeeah vocals. Oasis records always sound like nobody who was involved in making them wanted to be there.

This thread is mostly making me think I need to revisit the music of Robbie Williams. I bet the good stuff holds up better than Definitely Maybe.

Update on this: Let Love Be Your Energy is the best Oasis song ever and Oasis didn't even do it.

Worse than Coldplay. Worse than syphilis.
syphilis (not the band) is OK

yep, dull sing along obnoxious characters
I still find myself singing along to some of the hits if they happen to play in the elevator
blur ftw
edit for typo

The shop in Egerton Crescent round the back off Wilmslow Road? that used to be owned by my mate Nick at one time , he sold it years ago. He had a period of being obsessed by Acid Mothers Temple
I was in Withington at the weekend and went to check out what had happened to this place - and it's still a record shop, but also a bar/cafe. Picked up a few LPs, the cakes looked good. It was busy too.

this place: Wilderness Record Store | Buy Records Online | Visit Us In Withington

Nice one. Funnily enough, a friend of mine who I spoke to the other week said that she'd nipped in there to see if they had outside drinking but they hadn't but ended up going to the Red Lion beer garden which a woman who apparently co owns it or something.

When I'm was speaking to her I asked if she remembered Nick who had it decades ago and then had some flashback to when he promoted some Japanese psychedelic rock band Acid Mothers Temple gig in Ashton.

They had outdoor drinking on Saturday - every table full too, or I might have stopped for a brew. Thought it was a pretty sweet set up tbh, though I missed the 25p tapes.

I liked their first LP but it soon became obvious that Noel Gallagher’s lyrics and his lumpen riff off tunes were complete gibberish - pseudo intellectual shite that meant nothing at all. He’s continued this crap with his current band. Embarrassing shit for thickos. I mean “Who built the Moon?” - fuck off potato head.

I don’t think there would be so much vitriol and criticism of Oasis if they hadn’t been so massively successful , if they disappeared after album number one I reckon it would have been remembered as a decent release from an OK band . They suffer from a bit of snobbery , “ commercial success “ is still frowned upon by keen music fans . I count myself amongst the culprits , I’m not suggesting they are memorable but they don’t really deserve quite so much hatred.

Ditto U2 Ditto Coldplay
