Who liked Oasis?

every man jack of the so-called brit pop bands were shit, they truly were the nadir of pop music in the past 50 years

you are forgetting

a - Pulp
b - Stock Aitken And Waterman

Depends what you define as 'Britpop'. Radiohead's "The Bends" came out the same year as "...Morning Glory", "Different Class" and "The Great Escape", so are they Britpop?

an essential britishness in the lyrics and musical influence, as ever the 'Brit' pretty much equals english in practice
fans of it will no doubt dispute this but the Bends has american fm alt-rock running through it.
the best song 'fake plastic trees' (which I admit is great) uses a Coke ad as it's chorus
not britpop then, which I'm sure they'd be pleased about as most of it was awful toss.

never rated pulp and weren't SAW more prominent in the late 80s/early 90s, significiant though their contribution is?
but there was so much amazing drum n bass, techno, 'IDM', even breakbeat about in 95, that the likes of pulp and shed seven paled into insignificance beside them

Or, another "we don't like it because it's lazy, artless, lowest common denominator toss" music thread... :)

I wouldn't call Oasis artless or lazy but you have a point about it being "lowest common denominator", only I'd say that they cleverly managed to hit a chord with the 'rock loving masses' by producing a blend of stuff reminiscent of T-Rex, Gary Glitter, the Sex Pistols etc. They are rock easy listening, but they do it brilliantly and I still enjoy them when I'm in the mood.

I still recall doing my A'level coursework listening to Definitely Maybe. It remains a very good debut, and WTSMG was a decent follow-up. They've been around about 15yrs too long really.

Thought Oasis were great with the first album, ok with the second, ok live (only saw them once), extremely dull after the second album.

Loved Blur for several albums and saw them live a few times, all good, then lost interest.

i turned off the jukebox at the plug when an oasis song started playing the 6th form common room. the only song i liked on that jukebox was Green Onions.

I loved the whole brit pop thing. Some cracking songs around though there weren't that many great albums.

I think someone mentioned a sort of spirit of the time vibe about them. I can understand that, but looking back they weren't actually as good as we thought and certainly nowhere as good as they thought they were/are. I still like Definitely Maybe a lot, but they were a two album band at best. I think they were seen as very good at the time due to the vibe, but just like The Strokes (who went through the same process), they are just an average band that did good for a short while.

I would, and that was being gentle.

Fair enough. But as usual, I don't see why other people discussing their opinions, and disagreeing with yours, should remotely affect your enjoyment.

And it doesn't, but having been into all kinds of music for decades, and I mean BIG time, I get weary of people saying that some of the music I like is no more than ephemeral dross. The implication is that they are somehow more musically sophisticated.

The first track on their first album (Rock And Roll Star) is great.

It all went on a pretty constant downward slide after that.

Well, you can draw whatever inference you choose from the fact that we don't like the same music. Tbh, I couldn't give a toss. But that doesn't mean I won't continue to proffer an opinion.

Oh well, yet another "I don't like it therefore it's shit" music thread.

Hey! this follows my post which I thought was quite even tempered and addressed your concerns.
considering how shit Oasis were it was not at all how you make out

Pulp were great, you missed out.
and mentioning them alongside Shed bloody Seven is like ooooh, equating orbital and faithless maybe?
I was mentioning SAW more in context of...

they truly were the nadir of pop music in the past 50 years

I take it we disagree there too.

I don't disagree that there was a load of great techno and drum & bass around then it was mostly what I was going out to dance too as well but they offer different things................

welcome to the music forum

music snobbery is unavoidable, indeed virtually mandatory here.

as is a belief in your own taste and opinion that won't crumble before differing opinions.

no one is implying they are more musically sophisticated than you, you're merely infering it because you disagree.

don't get whiny about it ;)

That's all that needs to be said really. I don't like most electronic music but I wouldn't insult the intelligence of someone like Orang Utan who does like it by calling it shit. I'd rather proffer my opinion by saying "I don't get it" instead.

but where's the fun in that?
we'd hardly need a music forum at all

"I Don't Get It" - that's not an opinion,
and as you mentioned earlier that you like Kraftwerk then you probably do 'get it' - you maybe just don't like a lot of it. fair play.
Orang Utan has some rum tastes in music (phil collins for a start) and is happy to stand up for them, I also know that he likes some rock music, which I'd say makes him perfectly qualified to say he thinks Oasis are shit.

again, he's not insulting your intelligence anymore than if he said he hated pizza when you told him how delicious it was.

Oasis are shit by the way (no offence) but Pizza is lovely (mostly)

Suit yourself, but I'm certainly not going to say "I don't get it" about the likes of Oasis, because I do.

I just think they're fucking rubbish at what they do. If that's offensive to your poor sensibilities, tough, quite frankly.

If he says he hates Oasis and pizza then fair enough, but to say Oasis and pizza are shit, is to imply that their shitness is a fact, as opposed to it just being his opinion.

"I don't get it" may be less of an opinion than "It is shit", but imo it's a far more honest reflection of why we like different types of music.
