Critiquing Oasis

One thing that annoys me about Oasis is how they're "like the Beatles"... I just don't hear it...its a massive overcompliment to them
if anyone can post 3 Beatles tunes that sounds like Oasis or 3 Oasis tunes that sound like Beatles please do
Maybe they'll do a cover of When Im 64 for these new gigs

I'm pretty sure they encouraged people to think they'd copied the Beatles because being a poor facsimile of the Fab Four was several levels higher than their actual level of musicianship.

They often sound like the Beatles and borrow things from them while ripping off people whose lawyers might not be quite as sharp.

Liam's phrasing and vocal mannerisms can be quite Lennony ("nobody no-woahs" in Stand By Me) and the queasy glissando string arrangement on Whatever is late period Beatles. Drum fill in Don't Look Back In Anger is almost a pastiche of a Ringo fill. Backing vocals on Up In The Sky are very Beatles.

No-woahs yes can hear that's vaguely Lennonish but overall it sounds nothing like the Beatles to me, and drum fills hardly enough to warrant any kind of comparison.

Seem to remember they copied quite a few people and had to pay out significant compensation as a result.

Like quite a few bands of that era, I don't have much of a connection with them due to age. I was in my 30s in the 90s and so just about of the right age to like them, but had just gone from metal to a failed attempt at getting into jazz. I liked quite a few of the songs and bought the first couple of albums, but never really liked the laddish money making vibe + the tedious manufactured battle with blur. Equally, it was great to hear a working class voice in the vaunted halls of 'rock' music and a big fuck off to the commentators who berated them for their laddishness, when they really hated them for their class.

TLDR? I'm too old.

Honestly don’t know enough Oasis songs to be able to do that. But they seem to me to owe more to Slade. (Who are epic, btw).

I never paid Oasis much attention. I knew they existed and was aware of their songs washing around the background.

What turned me actively against them was all the people learning Wonderwall on guitar to sing at parties. It’s the same reason I don’t like Simon and Garfunkel.

I see no reason to care one way or another whether they reform. I won’t hear it.

Alright, a Beatles song is mentioned in their first single, a Lennon quote is in arguably their most famous song, the singer named his first son Lennon, Wonderwall Music is also the name of George Harrison's debut solo album, She's Electric literally rips off the end of A Little Help From My Friends... it's no wonder (wall) they're at least heavily associated with them even if they're not a direct copy

I wouldn't mind seeing them again for old times' sake. But it'll be stupidly expensive and at Wembley or somewhere where you're miles away so I doubt I'll go. I used to enjoy watching them before they totally lost the plot, though. I took my brother to his first gig - Earls Court, when Morning Glory was out - so they have a place in my heart just for that because we had such a great night. But yeah, hundreds of pounds to see them in a football stadium. Nah, don't think so.

Another thing about Oasis that depresses me is the way they became all about the 2 brothers. They started off as a bunch of no hopers and did, admittedly, put themselves in Noel's hands as the songwriter. Equally, Liam was certainly the front man. But somehow it shifted from being a 'band' to something where they took all the decisions, sacked people, created the dramas and, presumably, took virtually all of the money. Oasis aren't unique in that, but it's still a bit sad.

They used to have good support bands, Oasis. I got to see The Verve, Happy Mondays, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers just from going to see them.

Also had to sit through The Bootleg Beatles, the Manics and Ocean Colour Scene but there you go, it was the 90's.

Aye, my heart bleeds for Bonehead playing barre chords incredibly loud (ahem) all around the world and becoming rich beyond my wildest dreams. Poor lad :D

Saw them at Knebworth but can’t say I am excited by the prospect of doing so again. Won’t be as good, probably a high knob count, hassle of going to a massive event, expensive… I’m old.

Well yeah, as always in these situations, you balance being a de facto session musician with extreme wealth. Ditto the likes of Metallica. My point though is that the people who take over what was once some sort of democracy or at least something you did as a bunch of mates, are twats. Which certainly fits the bill with Metallica.

i know they want to heavily associate themselves with the Beatles, and thats exactly my problem...saying 'we're like the fookin beatles' doesnt actually make you anything like them...they love the hype by association and calling your firstborn Julian or whatever doesnt make that any different...they sound like what they are, a 90s dirge-leaning rock band with some simple melodies and fair share of ropey lyrics - but respect to Liam because its delivered with a lot of attitude and a good vocal moan < he makes the band

To quote Paul McCartney on Oasis "“They’re derivative and they think too much of themselves. They mean nothing to me.”

well this is passing the evening :)

Maybe they should be forced to go to an Ashram for a few weeks and give all their money to a cult leader.
