Crafty Thread - what are you working on at the moment?

how's it going with the studio setup Shirl ? terms at my place seem pretty good - all rates, electricity (within reason), rubbish organised/paid for. wifi's patchy but they're happy to wire in connections (my space is a corner of a shed, basically :D)

i've changed my plans just cos the space is still tight. plan now is for office/storage space, for bookbinding, product photography and shop space. but i'll have to keep some of my messier workshop stuff at home. i have 24 hour access to the print workshops, so at least i'll be able to spread out and/or dry for bigger projects :)
You sound very organised bob, I'm so glad you're there now :)

Our studio is good but could be better and getting it better is just down to me and my friend who shares it. We were keen to start up so our decorating was minimal and now I'm wanting to do more. I might paint the floor next week like I should have done at the start  and we need to make more of the shop area with extra lighting. We have a had lovely multifuel stove installed that will keep us warm over winter.
The rent is very low, electricity is on a smart metre and I pay every month so it doesn't mount up. We have to remove our own rubbish though. After the open studio the other week there was much clanking of bottles in the recycling :D
I've been selling enough to cover costs and a bit more besides but so far I've only sold to people I know or friends of friends. I'd like to be making sales from people who come in to look around. There's a few events on in our town this weekend including an alternative Christmas and lots of shops have Christmas windows etc. I'm hoping it will bring more tourist into the mill.

not quite there yet - next weekend i'm in london for art and drinking, then the next weekend i'm in liverpool for drinking and book fair. then i get to move in :D if i don't explode from impatience in the meantime ;)

covering costs ftfw

do you have an etsy shop? i'm seeing the studio as a place to really concentrate on that. but also, they run a monthly open studio, workshops, parties, gigs and gatherings, plus now the pizza place, and we're just around the corner from the big arts centre so hopefully a lot of footfall :)

oh re: lighting, i got some infinitely adjustable studio lights on ebay that are pretty spendy but great quality and i need at least one for my next fine art show. having done a couple of markets i think lighting is fundamental, especially to anything like jewellery that needs to glisten :thumbs :

:D he has 6 left and the lowest offer he'll take is £75 :thumbs :

eta: most budget version: you can buy the lamps from maplin and i'm fairly sure you can buy the tripod stands by themselves, they're just attached with a wing nut. if you buy in bits you'll need a filter carrier for a diffuser too.

any particular reason one over the other? the benefits i see from etsy are the street teams. our local one got a prime shopping centre space in the run-up to xmas. that kind of group organising power looks good to me atm...
I don't know anything about street teams bob  I registered for etsy a couple of years ago but then never used it. I thought I might try folksy as it's a uk site and I'm not looking for loads of sales as I don't really want loads of work, just steady  I definitely can't be bothered with posting abroad.

street teams are just local groups organising as collectives. compare a shop unit + organised invigilation with a craft fair where you have to be there the whole time...

if you're not already on etsy it would be cruel of me to recommend it - that's where any and all profits i make get spent :D

am doing this and I'm not happy with some of metallic threads so maybe gonna try and unpick it. a couple of stitches are well off and it'll be obvious on the finished piece, not supposed to be stitching with em in the first place and I've accidentally turned the bottom of the horn.

really need to get a good pic of it in daylight cus it's creating some beautiful shadows. with all the greys and silvers

doing the whole thing with a single thread in padded satin stitch for practice.

got another thing I'm designing atm, elephants.

gotta do a pineapple for Stella and a penguin for someone else at some point.

ahh they'll be mounted init, it's just natural calico, pretty cheap £5/m

using anchor and DMC thread 6 ply but obv dividing them into a single thread

I aint embroidered for years (at least 2 decades) before doing this and I cant feel my hands properly.

must be like bike riding

and am always high

Oh, that is just gorgeous Pengaleng - really lovely.

eta. weed is, I find, not an optional extra doing this sort of intensive fiddly stuff...but an absolute requirement.
