Crafty Thread - what are you working on at the moment?

Stripped and redyed a pair of jeans so that come next Wednesday (when there's enough money for the microbrushes) they can be finished with fabric paint. Meanwhile, I can work out what's going where on them.

Aha, what colour did you choose in the end?

They're currently a very dark greenish teal - tropical green+bermuda blue+jeans blue.

The residual colour was a pale greenish yellow, so I thought that if I aimed for even a very dark red the colour would be muddy.

Also need some fabric paint in red and opaque yellow (already got copper)... :hmm:

work in progress :)

Bob, your stuff is amazing! It's so beautiful. Can I ask a bit more about the technique? Is it like this?

The city is gorgeous too - is it found bits and bobs, looks like a stripped computer? Is that the finished thing or will it be bigger? (Sorry for all the questions...)

Also this is only vaguely crafty thread related but I'm really excited......

it's a really really long story as to why but I'm signing up to a metalwork/welding/sculpture course starting in January.

It's the first thing I've actually been really proper enthusiastic about in a long time. :):)

no worries at all, always happy to yammer on about making stuff :D

yeah enamelling is just applying layers of powdered glass onto a metal base and firing to melt/fuse it. we use copper at college cos it's cheap but it's not very shiny so i used silver foil over the top, which is what makes the colours so luminous. i used a technique called cloisonné where you apply wires to the base and then fill in between with different colours.

the city is made from a load of dismantled radios. i'm spraying all the pieces white, so hopefully when it's done it'll look like an architectural model. it's going in a radio shape/size case cut from clear acrylic (eventually, if tech decides to take pity on me). so it'll be a little world inside a radio. i have teeny tiny people and trees for finishing touches too :D
