Saw the news on this earlier and wondered if this was a controlled flight into terrain (given the mention of hilly / mountainous area) , but some of the videos released look as if it’s gone straight in nearly vertically. Hope they get to understand what happened asap.

Dropped 8000 metres in two minutes according to the software, apparently. Fire brigade reached crash site and found bits of wreckage but no signs of any persons dead or alive

At a guess probably heard / saw something and then got the phone out, not unusual behaviour nowadays.

The pilot would have been trying everything possible to pull it out of the dive, so the engines would have been quite loud for at least two minutes before the crash.

I don't usually click Mail links but I have a thing about plane crashes. That is some full on scary shit.

No sign of black box yet. Heavy rain means wide area search on hold. Declared no survivors yesterday, presume that was just balance of probabilities.
Read victims include six people from same family who were heading back to hometown for a funeral

If it went vertically down like that dashcam suggests the blackbox may not be worth anything anyway, they are tough but not indestructible.

One of the black boxes found, so badly damaged they're not yet sure which one it is: 东航失事飞机MU5735黑匣子已找到一个 "暂不确定是数据记录器（FDR）还是驾驶舱话音记录器（CVR）。"For the moment not determined if its the flight data recorder FDR or the cabin voice recorder (?) CVR"

Some reports suggest it is the Cockpit Voice Recorder. Images clearly show only the crash survivable memory unit being recovered.

The other story just read said the crew were experienced and no reports of family troubles or the like, for what that's worth: 东航失事客机飞行员健康状况良好、飞行经历完备

Doesn't have to be a known issue could be down to poor/faulty maintenance.

How the pilot managed to pull that up a bit at 7425 ft mark after a drop of 20000 ft is unreal.

It looks battered but at the end of the day those things are designed to withstand massive forces, so there's a chance they might get something out of it. It doesn't seem too damaged by fire, more of an impact shock.
