'Bleeding' vegan burger is an 'existential threat' to beef' whines NZ MP

In the quote, it sounds as though he thinks they shouldn't be offering any alternative to red meat. Which is bonkers.

But MP Mark Patterson, of the ruling New Zealand First Party, said the national carrier's decision to serve the vegan burger was a "slap in the face" to the country's $6bn red meat sector.

Is ratatouille a slap in the face? Lentil stew? Surely on a flight it's going to be meat or not meat. Does it matter what the alternative is? Is he offended by quorn?

It's just very odd.

It's some dumb patriotic thing. It's Air New Zealand and the country is full of cattle farmers. That's the best I can do - I don't really get it but New Zealand First are a pretty traditionalist bunch. He probably is offended by quorn.

The quote at the end of the article from Air New Zealand makes a lot more sense in a wider world context.

 another one! reasons upthread

I've read the thread. The resource saving claims makes the assumption massive adoption, I think that's somewhat assperational. Given the choice between real meat and a vegan alternative produced with heme there is a fair chance most meat eaters will pick a meat burger. Good luck to them.

I'd try it, but suspect that it won't be the same. Which is fair enough as its not.

Needless to say this isn't the threat this chap thinks it could be.

All the taste of beer but no alcohol. Not every one can have alcohol.
Vegan burger..all the taste of meat but no meat.

Non alcoholic beer is like going down on your sister. Even if it does taste taste the same, it's just wrong.

It's an EXISTENTIAL THREAT to the NZ meat industry and by extension the entire NZ way of life.

And this is the thing, surely, it's the potential threat to the industry and the possible economic consequences he's concerned about.

I don't really think Air New Zealand offering 1 product on 1 flight represents much of a threat to anything. Maybe he is actually in cahoots with the Air NZ and Impossible Foods marketing teams and it's all part of the publicity :D
