'Bleeding' vegan burger is an 'existential threat' to beef' whines NZ MP

The impossible burger is being rolled out to every US Burger King next week.

The Impossible Whopper is coming to every Burger King in America next week - CNN

Someone gave me a half of one last week. Tastes exactly like a normal fast food burger; mostly tasteless except for the spices they grind into it. It feels like meat, though, with the same textures and "fatty" juices. Thickened coconut oil and a bunch of leghemoglobin brewed from GM yeast, approved by the FDA in July, as so many safe things have been before. Yum! Proud to be one of the first humans to consume large quantities of this protein.

I like the idea of programming yeast or bacteria to produce protein that tastes like meat, as long as it consumes fewer resources than normal meat production does, and as long as it's safe to eat. If the company could somehow sell this cheaper than meat they might be able to reduce demand for real meat. Could be hard to make a profit, though. The patties already cost far more than meat and if these guys are anything like every other silicon valley venture capital funded company I bet they're selling them at a loss even at that price.

Amen:
Vegans and Nestlé
Although the products are free-from animal products, Nestlé is a brand many vegans boycott due to its chequered history when it comes to various business practices.

These include a major scandal in the 1970s, when many boycotted the conglomerate due to its aggressive promotion of its formula milk over breastmilk to women in developing countries.

Following an internal investigation, Nestlé admitted that forced labor practices were taking place in its supply chain. It has also faced accusations of child labor, unethical water mining, and deforestation among others.

Had some vegan fried chicken given away free in the street a few days ago.

Was yum. Seriously couldn't taste the difference from chicken at all, really. Surprisingly delish and devoid of the puritianism I find with a lot of vegan food.

I’m on my way to somewhere that will have some vegan food stalls shortly. Will keep an eye out...
