Birkbeck university

I would've thought so... You don't have to pay tax either if you're a full-time student, but I'm assuming that isn't the case for part-timers... can any Birkbeck students past or present confirm that?

I have just checked with HSBC and you do need to be a full time student. Bang goes that plasma TV! I assume it's the same for tax.

Wow, it's cool that so many of you have had good experiences with it. I hope you hear from them soon, Cloo! Your course sounds really cool, I hope you get onto it.
Tension mounting... I'm going to gsv's tomorrow night, so I may have to ring my housemate to ask her if there's a letter and get her to read it to me if so!

Will have to phone them tomorrow anyway to check if there would be any paperwork etc if I did get on the course, so I can make arrangements for things to be dealt with in my absence if I have to. The lady at the Birkbeck office did imply she would have lists once the decision was made, so it'll be worth me asking if she can tell me.

I`m just about to start my 4th year at Birbeck...

I was 29 when i began the course and TBH its flown by.

When i started i was living with my girlfriend and with no other commitments thought it was time to fulfill a long term ambition. I`m now married to her, have a (nearly) 2 year old son and have changed jobs. Studying part-time can be hard but not impossible.

The only thing i feel i`ve missed out on is the social aspect of being a student...albeit a mature, P/T one. I`d done enough lying around, watching day-time T.V, drinking and drug taking (insert any other lazy stereotype) when i was younger without having been a student but just getting together with fellow students for a night out can be a headache at Birkbeck coz most people have jobs, families etc to worry about.

I`ve been pretty impressed also by the standard of lecturing - bearing in mind though that i don`t have much to compare it to.

Good luck and enjoy :)

That's really encouraging to me that you've done so much major, major stuff while still studying... I've been slightly worried I won't have the time or money to do anything but work and write essays! So thanks, and, much more importantly, congrats on your wedding and son! :D

I did a creative arts degree when I was just out of school, so I had three years of getting all that stuff in, so hopefully I won't miss it this time around!

Again, good news - and thanks!

Aaargh! Still haven't heard. I may have to end up working from home for a bit on Thurs morning just to wait in for the possibility of a letter from them!

Cerberus: must second pleased comments about being able to study and do the 'weighty' life stuff. First child about to be born, starting MPhil in just over a week - self-financed and part-time. It's going to be hectic.

Birkbeck is good ime, lots of commitment in the students (something often missing with the fresh faced starting uni after A-levels)

Fingers crossed for you, Cloo!

I'm definitely on for a meet-up, but I'd quite like to wait a wee while... I think it might take me a week or two to adjust to working and studying, so I don't really want to be out all night boozing just yet! Which is probably just as well if the bar is being fixed. :D

Just rang them - I've got a place! :D

And on top of that I'm flying out to South Africa for two weeks tonight! :D :D

Phew! Glad I found out before going - it's a shame I'll miss the first week, but I guess that means I should only miss one full-on session as the first one will just be intros, I suppose.

Crikey - the next three months are going to be chaos, but never mind!

Regarding a meet up - yeah, give it a few weeks, for me. If it's a Monday or Weds I can join in after 9.30 when I'm done. I'll be studying in South Ken rather than Bloomsbury.

i've heard rumours that our esteemed editor is running a mini-offline in the college bar on friday night, what better time for an urban birkbeck get-together.. i will be there..

you should too..

where, when and by what sign shall we know each other?

It's my first night tonight. Starting to feel a bit nervous now for some reason. I was fine up till about 30 minutes ago!

One thing I haven't worked out is what to do about dinner. I can't go from lunchtime untill 9pm without eating and I don't want to eat fast food everyday.

Ed, has it got a name? I'm in a tutorial at the mo and will announce it at the end of the lesson.
