Wage error and Universal Credit.

Well after CCing the big boss and getting a reply from him I got a four paragraph email from HR where she apologises profusely while insisting it was all the payroll co's fault. She will pay the missing money by bank transfer tomorrow. She is happy to provide a letter for the UC confirming role and wage. She apologises for the lack of contract for my position starting in September while blaming a member of staff who left in June. I take it by its omission she is refusing to update the RTI file. On its own it's not a big deal. One person at UC told me that lots of new jobs take a few months to straighten out and it will be worked out in the end. But if we don't get our col payment my wife will probably burn the school down. What I'm wondering is how liable they would be for any loss of benefits incurred as a result of their shoddy accountancy.
from my skim reading of the payment schemes rules, if you are found at a later date to have been entitled to the payment you will get it when this comes to light.
keep badgering them on both sides and don't let up (it can be tiring)
Not much help in the short term though.

I had a personal apology from the big boss who came to see me in my little room at the end of the furthest wing of the building. They're still not redoing the payslip though. Meanwhile as they have still not managed to supply a contract, I am exploring the possibility of getting out and have an interview elsewhere next week. This is not just down to the pay mistakes though. The length of commute, pay, change in my immediate management and general working atmosphere have all been getting me down. The new place is geographically perfect but their desperation to hire suggests I should be careful.

Wife has been badgering the UC people and the woman she spoke to 'reckons' we'll get the payment but can't do anything about it. She won't give up if she doesn't get it. She says she'll take the school to court.

Could really do without the stress but at least I'm getting control back. I've had pay errors before but not on this scale and have never had an employer suggest we just leave it till next month before.

what has your research on the "new place" brought up?
might be worth moving from reading you, but yeah "better the devil you know" and all that.
worth threatening the school with court before going ahead, it usually helps, especially if you can get a "solicitor" letter from your local legal aid place (if there is one where you are) as litigation is very expensive on their side so fixing the problem will be cheaper for them despite whatever costs it involves (lambeth council (officers) does not seem to see if it that way though, and they lost).

When I told the head that mrs maomao would probably take them to court if she doesn't get it, he said 'I'm sure we can work something out', so I think he acknowledges that.

I will have a good nose around the other place before making any decisions.

Ask about staff turnover - peer level, changes in immediate management over past 12 months, departmental changes.. Check for general levels of unhappiness/chaos but unfortunately some issues just won't become obvious until you're in that system.
