also I rarely play guitar on recordings but i was very happy with my little solo during the "atonal" part of this song, it's at least as good as anything jimi hendrix has played:

Kurt Cobain - Smells like teen spirit. Mostly just follows the melody line - but its so expressive and just so right for the tune.

Fitting notes to chord progressions/vamps is basically a jazz game. There's tremendous skill to it, and it can be powerful and inventive. But it ain't rock.
