BBC6 Radio - comment, discussion and moans

And place-dropping, such as 'i'm recording this in Tokyo this week' or wherever, as if to say what a cool life i've got don't you wish you were me?

Today he claimed that in the covered Markets of Brixton there's always a Sade song playing

That's not something I've noticed in 30+ years of living here. Not something anyone else has ever mentioned as being a thing here. Which covered Markets is he going to where this is happening?

My main moan is do we really need the news every bloody hour. Surely, 9am, 12pm & 5ish would be enough.
I agree. especially when it's filled with bullshit like what the king is up to today.
and think of the budget the BBC could save by reducing the news bulletins across the music stations.

but doubt it'll ever happen. people would be up in arms about them betraying their public service remit.

I'd sign a petition to just remove the DJs completely and replace them with AI bots.

Unfortunately my work day coincides with Craig fucking Charles and his 'time machine', delivered in that creepy creepy voice. I got Keaveny sacked, with the help of others here, and I now fully regret that. I'm sorry Sean. Come back.

I can't really get upset about 2 minutes of news in every hour.
I wouldn't either if that's all it was, but the length of 6's news bulletins (and other non-music bits) seems to have increased in the last few years, which I assume must be due to cost cutting - a couple of record plays fewer per hour (@ about £50 per minute I think) adds up to a big saving over a year. IMO there's often a clear distinct bias in their news coverage too, enough to have me frequently shouting Alexa OFF!

although we should be careful what we wish for.
they'd probably replace each news bulletin with an additional trail for BBC Sounds or the latest shit BBC One drama. not have the DJ play an extra track.

Please god no more cloudbusters. I'm sick of being told to be upbeat every single morning, and it's ruining my enjoyment of the actual Kate Bush song as I come to associate it almost entirely with an unseen horde of rictus-grinning folk shouting CHEER UP LOVE, IT MIGHT NEVER HAPPEN.

Or if you won't get rid of it, at least have the decency to alternate cloudbusting with cloud-revelling - you know, playing listeners' picks of the most sardonic, cynical, fuck-all-this tunes. Now that I could get on board with.

Hopefully Radiohead will release some new stuff soon :D

Aye, I mind the same constant trails and self advertising (to the point that you could basically recite them) far more than I mind a news update.

'This is Huw Stephens. 6 Music'. I don't fucking care. Honestly hearing his name or hearing about Wills 'going back to work' on the news every half hour or whateevr it is. I'm gonna get the old lynch mob back together. It got much worse then that new controller took over.

Eh?

These stations are getting their shit arse about face.

Listening to 6 this morning, 90% of it was from the 90s. how old is the radio 2 spin off looking at? I see 6 as a channel already playing mostly older music.

They should stick Tony Blackburn on instead of rapey craig. Then 2 & 6 will be 2/6 in old money.

I thought radio 2 was older music

It was, but they fucked it by trying to skew younger and lost a load of their core boomer audience in the process. They're trying to connect to all the old radio 1 listeners from the 90s/00s but a lot of those have moved on to 6 Music, or just not interested in DJs like Zoe Ball or Vernon Kay. So they lost loads of long time listeners and DJs to stations like 'Greatest Hits radio' and suchlike, which is where a lot of the oldie jocks are now like Ken Bruce.

I had to listen to Radio 2 last week when I was in the sticks and it has plenty of similar aged stuff to 6 just more MOR.

Just reading about this here: Radio 2 spin-off among four new stations planned by BBC

It's all just too much fragmentation. So in addition to this new radio 2 spinoff (presumably to try and recapture the exodus of listeners they've lost to boomer radio or greatest hits), they're also launching yet another Radio 1 'spinoff' which will...

"focus on music from the 2000s and 2010s, catering to the appetite from young audiences for recent nostalgia"

I mean really what is the point in this? What even is "Recent nostalgia"? Who wants to listen to a station that only plays stuff between 2000 and 2020?

Then there's the new radio 3 one which will

focus on calming classical music, aimed at helping listeners "unwind, de-stress and escape the pressures of daily life".

So probably just another generic calm classical station. I mean a spotify playlist can probably do the job here and I'm sure it has a place, but I don't feel its particularly dynamic thinking.

And then 'Radio 1 Dance' will go to DAB. Currently just on BBC sounds. I don't really know what the audience for this is. But it does a lot of generic playlist stuff with no DJs or just repeats or simulcasts of other Dance stuff on Radio 1. It's just very generic. The funniest thing that ever happened on that station was the feed getting interrupted with the announcement that Prince Philip died before cutting back to the beats.
