avaaz.org .. interesting global protest group

Have just got an email from avaaz claiming:

Here's a quick snapshot of what we've achieved so far:

* grown to become the largest global online citizens’ movement in history
* nearly 4 million members, 15 million actions, 55 million friends told
* 2500 house parties, 3000 flashmobs, 3300 vigils for climate action all around the world
* millions of dollars/euros/yen donated to campaigns, democracy movements and humanitarian relief
* Over 200 campaigns conveying tens of millions of voices to leaders at critical moments

Also with an online poll where you can make your votes for their priorities in the coming year.

IIRC they are US based and their genesis was in anti-war stuff.

I've been to a couple of their events. What's impressive is the global aspect of it, doing a vigil or whatever knowing there are so many thousands worldwide doing so at the same time, pretty powerful.

But there was one for Copenhagen where participants read out a few lines of a piece what someone wrote, Christ but it was dippy hippy schlock - and I have a high threshold for that kind of thing. They are genuinelly nice, but the politics seem a little naive i.e "lets ask rulers to be nice and hope for the best"
