Australian Labor PM on Tory misogyny - Julia Gillard

Anyone know more about her? Can you provide a summary of what you know?

She was Deputy PM in Rudd's cabinet and betrayed then deposed him with a Labor party coup as soon as he went 10 points behind in the polls. She then lost the Labor majority in the subsequent general election and had to cobble together a governing coalition with some independents who are varying degrees of mental. Despite a clear pre-election promise to the contrary she introduced a Carbon Tax that does less than zero for emissions control. She spent a few years watching an ever increasing number of asylum seekers/illegal immigrants arrive or drown on the way before she performed a spectacular backflip and reinstated John Howard's solution of shipping them off to a guano encrusted rock in the middle of the Pacific. One of the independents in the governing coalition is completely obsessed with legislation to control electronic gambling and that was the price of his support for the government. Gillard then betrayed him and cast him aside but preserved her 1 seat majority by coaxing rogue Liberal MP Peter "Slippery" Slipper in the Speaker's chair. Slipper proved to be an absolute catastrophe and embarrassment, eventually resigning last week over various sex and expenses scandals. There is also the Craig Thomson situation. Thomson is a typical Labor party MP: ex union hack of little brain but slavish loyalty. He distinguished himself by spending his low paid union members' subscriptions on hookers and jelly babies. Gillard has managed to drag out the investigation into this mess by four years and continues to protect him to preserve her wafer thin majority.

In short, she is a fucking disgrace who has easily displaced Billy McMahon as the worst ever Australian PM and she will be absolutely destroyed in the 2013 election.

The OP says that she as a Labour PM which she is, in Australia, but the opposition party is not Tory but Liberal, by name at any rate.

The Labor party and their fellow travellers (ABC, Pravda on the Yarra, etc.) like to refer to the Liberal-National coalition as 'tories' on a guilt by association basis.

Pulls others up on misogyny whilst cutting benefits to
single mothers. Sends asylum seekers arriving in Australia
to be processed at the God-forsaken Naura Detention Camp,
where many end up killing themselves.Jails the children of
refugees.
Horrid person.

Be that as it may, whatever else she has or hasn't done, what she said about sexism was something that struck a chord with women who have had to put up with that sort of thing again and again and again.

Julie Bindel is saying she is the greatest thing ever and an ''inspiration to women and feminists everywhere''

thats what you get with identity politics, left leaning liberals endorsing neo-liberals who on most other issues have nothing in common, well maybe a few more things....

She's a rancid neoliberal fuck, but then so are the rest of her party, and her party's opponents.

I'm glad she made a stand, but I'll be even gladder if she is consistent in her anti-sexism, and actually legislates on the basis of it.
I'm not holding my breath, though.

For once I can totally agree with you treelover, she's a scumbag. If she's sucha staunch feminist then why did she make use of Slipper? Why has she backed Thompson?

Fuck what she says it what she does that counts and the evidence there is clear that those actions haven't done anything to challenge (quite the opposite in fact) the misogyny she claims to oppose.

I really don't care about her politics - she was awesome!!!

I made hubby watch and he kept hammering about how he couldn't understand, and all I could say was, "Just watch her go!!!".

Hell hath no fury :D

Gillard is ghastly...Tony Abbot even more so. Some choice
we have...Same old same old 2 party system..Vote for a shit
sandwich or a giant douche.

This is the first time I've thought Julia Gillard's done anything good.

But bloody hell, was it GOOD.

I take it you (and everyone else praising Gillard here) are also fans of Thatcher then? She also stood up to the sexist male elite establishment. While also enforcing some fairly questionable policies.

Anyone notice how some blokes seem to be completely missing the point about why women thought it was great to watch?

I've a lot of family in Australia Mrs Magpie. Gillard is evil.

Ever notice how some people just don't get it?

She's put her opinions "on the agenda" in a way that hasn't been done about misogyny in a long time (especially as public figures tend to be infected with a need to be seen as "not giving in to political correctness"), so I can see why women would think watching her voice those opinions publicly, and roast the hide off of a greasy swine at the same time might be quite so appealing.

Surely it's possible to appreciate what a wonderful speech it was (both in terms of political theatre and in terms of bringing the issue of the opposition's consistent misogyny) whilst also thinking that she's a godawful PM as well?

When I stayed with family over there a few months ago, they told me repeatedly how much they detested Gillard. While some of their reasons were perfectly valid, it was all dressed in very unpleasant sexist/racist/misogynist language and attitudes. I doubt this is going to suddenly convert them to Labour voters, but if it makes them think twice about where their opinions are coming from, that can only be a good thing.

It's difficult to overstate just how intensely she is loathed by a broad section of the population. I went to Bill Bailey's stand up gig here and he slagged her off in the first minute and practically got a standing ovation. I guess BB knows how to work a crowd.

Just on this one point; assuming you're talking about Nick Xenophon, doesn't he have a case?

From what I've seen of his site (and I knew of him before today), I'd vote for him if I was a voter in his state.

Xenobot's a senator. Andrew Wilkie is the independent MP (federal member in Australian parlance) who Gillard fucked over. He should have known he was on a hiding to nothing as the Labor party fleeces gambling addicts for millions in its clubs in NSW, VIC and ACT so they were never going to initiate meaningful reform.

I don't follow Australian politics enough to comment on the rest of her record / policies etc, but would I be very very wrong to wish for a meeting between her and david cameron?

her reaction to "calm down, dear" might be entertaining...

:p

He took the piss out of her accent to her face when she was in London last year and she just nodded.

Indeed she is the leader of a once social democratic party (I remember the convention in which they dumped the socialist aims from the party's constitution some years ago) which is now fairly Blair-ite/Lite. But unfortunately they (ALP) have to take that road or for ever be consigned to the Opposition. The other mob are very right-wing and are within a whisker of government, they may win the next election. But give her her due, she is smart, courageous and principled. Apparently she is a really nice person (not at baby-kissing time but all the time).

This happened at a time when a radio shock jock in Sydney, one Alan Jones, told some really shitty jokes about her at a University Young Liberals (Tory) piss-up. See uni students aren't all Marxists, Trots and various splitters. In Australia they let the brats of the privileged in, they can be thick but rich and in they go. Anyway Jones got towelling in the social media over the shit he dropped on her.

This did her good, trust me. Looked like a cranky Elizabeth I she did. Only not as imperialistic.

If you judge her solely on her deeds, she's a neolib par excellence, and an accomplished coup plotter too.

Oh, getting rid of Rudd? Think of the complete antithesis of John Major and you may understand Rudd. Lots of activity, sod-all achievement (well almost sod-all).
