Athens Greece: Cops murder a 16 year old

problem with that is they are going to come down somewhere and still be lethal:(
either there attacking you and need shooting or there not. scaring people with guns bad idea.
unless its a shot gun where the shot won't be lethal when it comes down

Oh froggy baby. There was I thinking we would get on so well with me being a hetrosexual Muslim and all.
Not arse licking the governement but providing an alternative point of view.
Seems all here are united in convicting the 'pig' before the trial.
What I'm saying is that it would take a nutter to do something like that in public without cause.
The cop claimed it was a warning shot and with the new evidence it looks like he was telling the truth.

Still I'm sure that will be dismissed as fabricated so they can all continue fucking christmas up for the civilised people.

Enjoy being wrong all. :)

I'm not saying anything about the shooting, rather the broader mobilization of so many people. The individual case is a matter for the courts in my opinion and evidently the problem the Greeks have with their government is something the nature of which any random flash could have kicked all off, and indeed did.

But now that it's under way, where is it going, what does it want, what is its momentum? I mean dude, a General Strike... not small beans. I'm disgusted by the BBCs usual misrepresentative style of reporting. It's frustrating becoz I know little about political Greece, but tune in to the televised news sources and all you get is a bunch of hand-wringing about horrid "anarchists". For one thing, yobs are not anarchists, they're yobs, anarchy is a political ideology, you don't identify an anarchist by if it's lugging a brick, anyone can do that ffs.

Hello all..

Today I am not writing from the comfort of my house but from a friend's house here in Athens, near the city centre (Exarchia)... I will go down to the Polytechnic squat again in a bit, at least I hope that I will manage to enter there because the situation is still rather chaotic.

Before I go on with today's demo a few notes about ricocheting bullet....

Two different lawyers had been appointed to defend the cop, but both denied to do it as they said that they had no evidence to defend him.... Both of the 2 lawyers were formely candidates for the greek General Elections with the government party (New Democracy)... Both denied though and did not get the job, and there is where Mr Kougias jumped in and VOLUNTEERED to take the case... with NO PAYMENT FOR HIM.

Who is Mr Kougias? He is a very well known lawyer in Greece... He has a big public profile, he appears on various TV talk shows and on the news very very often. Throughout the years he has volunteered to defend "famous" crimes like this one.. For example he was the lawyer of a satanist girl, a girl who belonged on a satanist group and were killing people in order to worship satan.... His far right wing political views and his lies (he even staged an attack against him once) have made nearly whole Greece to hate him. He VOLUNTEERED to get this specific job, because it was a "high profile" case and it was a good excuse for him in order to be on TV every single day again.

So today he adviced his client and the following happened:

It was only yesterday that I was telling you on this thread that we are waiting for the results of the ballistic examination.. Suddently, today, we learn that these results not only exist, but they have even been included on the file for the court hearing.. A lot of us suspect that the results have been "cooked" but for now I will take them as genuine....

The murderer, the cop, today passed from the public attorney for a hearing. On his statement there he said the following :

a) Alexandros (the murdered kid) was a hooligan, he was involved in riots at a Panathinaikos game (Panathinaikos is a sports club) earlier that day

b) He was there with his friends looking for trouble

c) He was a rich kid from the north surburbs of Athens but he was always around at Exarchia

d) He (the cop) shot at the AIR.

This is what his attorney adviced him to say....

Some quick notes from me :

a) I know that Alexandros was a Panathinaikos supporter (as I am).. I also know that he was at that game earlier on Saturday but on the riots only a few (about 50) fans were involved and I dont think he was one of them. Even if he was though, how did the cop know this ? He went there to kill Alexandros or he was shot "accidentaly"?

b) He was there with his friends yes but there is no evidence that they were looking for trouble.. None of the eye witnesses said that there was a violent incident before the shot.

c) Is there a "No rich kids" sign at Exarchia??? This comment made me very angry actually, because in this way he "labels" this specific area

d) He says he shot at the air... so HOW DID THE BULLET RICOCHET ?? Well the lawyer has an answer to that... it bounced on a ... lamp post !! So he shot at the air the bullet bounced on a lamp post changed direction and shot Alexandors directly to his heart...

But what about the eye witnesses that say that they saw him AIMING at the kids ??

Actually there is also the.... UFO theory

About today now.. Not that many incidents took place at the demo.. There was a riot at Klauthmonos str as well as some riots at Omonia square. In Klauthmonos, members of the public got on the street while the cops were hitting some protestors and effectively managed to help the protestos leave. In Syntagma square, during the speeches of the workers unions, anarchists came in and attacked the police. You can see a video here:

http://www.zougla.gr/news.php?id=16299

The police responded with extended use of chemicals.

Also riots took place near the building of the Parliament as you can see on the following photos

http://athens.indymedia.org/front.php3?lang=el&article_id=939469

After the end of the demos the most of us gathered at the Polytechnic squat, it is the 5th day that is squat is holding.. Heavy riots against the police took place at the area around and I am sure that there are still things going on there, I had to leave because of breathing problems (again)

As I told you yesterday we were expecting fascists to appear today on the streets of Athens after of what happened yesterday, in Patras but also elsewhere... Well fascists do exist they have been spoted in groups at various areas of the city centre... On one incident they injured a comrade with a knife as they suddently attacked him. From a phone conversation that I had earlier there are fascists pretty close to the polytechnic building as well as near Exarchia square and there are clashes against anarchists.

I am going to go down to Exarchia square again now.

Talk to you later

Some interesting photos before I leave

WHO ARE ARRESTING THIS KID ?? DO THEY LOOK LIKE POLICE ??

UNDER COVER POLICE ARE WORKING TOGETHER WITH FASCISTS ... THEY GET DRESSED AS "ANARCHISTS" THEY DESTROY WHATEVER (WHY WOULD I WANT TO DESTROY A KEBAB SHOP FOR EXAMPLE ???) AND THEY BEAT UP, INJURE AND ARREST PROTESTORS.

THIS IS HOW OUR DEMOCRACY IS WORKING OVER HERE.

Oh by the way the ALL the soldiers that were out of the camps for a few days were called back in today, in all military camps around Athens today they are on HIGH allert... There is the possibility that the army will get on the streets today if rioting will continue !!!!

PLEASE TRY TO INFORM EVERYONE ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING IN GREECE ... FEEL FREE TO USE MY POSTS ON THESE BOARDS .. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

I am still in Athens I returned to my friends house for now... The situation is still very tense, there are riots around the polytechnic, very difficult to approach... Undercover policemen are all over the place, it is difficult to walk around without getting noticed. There is one HEAVY injured at the Polytechnic we were calling for help and for the police to go back a bit in order an ambulance to come in..

The journalists were told to leave the surroundings of the polytechnic, an argument started, finally they did not leave but all the TV channels have stopped broadcasting what is going on in Athens but broadcast their normal programmes ..... I do not know if this is good or not

I am on the streets since 12 o clock today, but I may return down because the situation is SERIOUS.

I will try to post more info tomorrow

PS: On the streets of Athens not only riots take place... watch this :)

Also something different... from last night's Champions League game Panathinaikos Vs Anorthosi

Standing oviation at the end for Alexandros... he was also a Panathinaikos fan.. You can see and a FUCK THE POLICE banner there.

paoanorthosi17wd3.jpg

Finally a panoramic view of the standing oviation

dsc02038copyqf0.jpg

We had asked from UEFA to postpone the match because of the events but they did not. We asked at least to hold 1 min of silence before the start of the game, but UEFA also rejected.

Finally the Panathinaikos fanatics (Gate 13) held 1 min of silence by themselves and started chanting with the first chant being:

POLICE PIGS MURDERERS.

can i say how much i've learnt through reading your posts dimitris? it is really fascinating and really moving learning about it from someone who's on the ground there

take care mate

Το μέλλον είναι μαζί σας. Η αδελφοσύνη.

I hope,

but also my beleif in online translation engines is also limited.

I dont think this remark should pass unchallenged.
It is a snide, sneering and miserable sputum of a comment, had it been almost anyone else I would have said it was beneath them.

How odious. .

Read Frogthingy's strap line under her username and try that post again.

Engage brain before mouth. :p

some last minute reports from Athens

Students start occupying streets - all over Greece hundreds of schools and unis have been already occupied, and many more demonstrations are expected to take us up to Xmas (from greek newspapers this morning) This recent occupation of the streets(I don't use the word squatting because they were in use before the occupation)are without warning and spontaneous -like the smell of revolution in the air

Ballistic tests expected tomorrow(friday)

The result of the ballistic tests hasn't been released yet, so any previous claims about ricochet were from the side of the murderer, and were only a defense tactic, that some right wing nuts also used to try to calm the rage of the vast majority of Greeks about the brutal murder of Alexis.
Alexis' family hasn't put the technical advisors for the ballistic testing yet (thursday morning), and that is the reason for the delay(from greek newspapers, this morning). Also -I agree with you Dimitris that they could be "cooked" and might have even been cooked already and Alexis family's advisors might only have the chance to read the report and not participate in the tests, I'm not sure how that works- but it lessens the percentage of the "cooking", although I'm not sure how much influence to the results their contribution will have

more from our lovely greek riots

There have been many incidents during the night of molotof attacks - another bank was attacked this morning in Athens- and burning of cars -one of which in front of the ERT (our BBC, kind of) building this morning (to my delight, I would love to see the attacks moving against the journalist stupid and sold out establishment) but unfortunately has been put out.
The Polytechnic as already Dimitris has written is still occupied -the greek radio and newspapers claim by a small group of people from radical left groups- Like I said before ,thankfully, we still have plenty of Poets of social action in Greece and new ones are being born by this fire that lit our hearts, after the knife in our guts with Alexis' murder.

for derf

I had the intention yesterday to reply to everyone of your vulgar posts about Alexis and the adjectives you used referring to him,
or about our young protesters of every kind,
and also to some of your totally biased and misinformed posts,
but after reading some of them again and the new ones,
I do not think there is a point of me wasting time to explain or try to inform someone who obviously is a not able to understand even something basic as showing some respect for the dead or even apologize afterwards when someone -I for example- has been offended by your comments and remarks about Alexis Grigoropoulos.
So I'll just leave it there and your burned Xmas tree...

I have not really looked at stock market during the last few days, the fact is though that greek stock market has decreased ENORMOUSLY since the start of the global financial crisis.

I disagree. Fluctuations in the Greek stock market appear to be broadly in line with the general perturbations across Europe as a whole.

The one important thing that has decreased enormously though is public sympathy and understanding that the Greek people would be shocked and angry at the shooting of an unarmed 15 year schoolboy by Greek police officers.

That sympathy rapidly disintegrated when a sizable minority of disaffected, economically disadvantaged and disenfranchised Greek young people decided that disproportionate vengeance and retribution, vigilante violence and running riot, tearing down all that their forefathers had tirelessly built, was appropriate behaviour.

Greek civil society needs to find a third way to solve it's problems of high unemployment and remote, non-progressive and increasingly high-handed and unaccountable governments. Indeed, this is a problem that other nations and not just Greece is facing.

You will find it in encouraging:

- the renaissance of community;
- urban gardening and self-grow movements;
- new utopian & consensus based urban linked rural farming communities;
- initiating & promoting barter and exchange economies to run alongside the old;
- environmental, repair and recycling projects;
- climate change education;
- new artisan colonies;

These are highly important creative projects that are about to become of the utmost importance the world ore over the next several years. Promoting steady adaptation now is essential. For many countries wedded and in the grip of free-market capitalism - and slow to change - such adaptations will seem a Herculean task, but today it is perhaps one of the most important endeavours and tasks human civilisation has faced since Noah constructed the ark.

They urgently need the energy of constructive, positive thinking new leaders and pioneers.

Police stations attacked by students in a few areas in Athens, students demonstrating in Galatsiou street with direction towards the police station in the area(Agias Lauras), more unis are being occupied , the latest in Pereus.

Galatsi str and Veikou str occupied- part of Vouliagmenis ave occupied, Kiprou ave occupied, in front of Chalandri police station demonstrations, Nikaia streets occupied, occupation of Solomou street(in front of koridallos prison, close to Pereas) all these by students after the 11 page long defense statement released this morning by the murderer where he almost blames Alexis for the shooting by talking about his character and his illicit behaviour
-Streets of Iliopoli are being occupied by students' demonstrations
-Chemicals released against students demonstrating in Koridallos
-more peaceful demonstrations by students (3 schools) in the Menidi area of Athens

Good to see 40 years on the spirit of 68 is still there. Stay strong Greek comrades - big up Dimitris and Stella :cool:

I'm going to use a quote by Giannis Dimaras I read this morning, before posting about the murderer's defense statement : "...It is vulgar and hypocritical to judge the behaviour or actions of our children when we shoot them with millions of unlawful and immoral behaviour ourselves..."

Thanks so much to Stella and Dimitris for their reports of what's going on. I have family in Athens and my older relatives are too scared to go out so can't really tell me fully what's going on - it's good to have some proper news about it.

One small positive about this situation is that it is making the world aware of what has happened in Greece in the past and the real situation there now rather than thinking it's all blue and white houses and sandy beaches. The London Paper last night was trying to explain the junta in a paragraph! I have had so many people say to me that they didn't know there were anarchists, or facists or any problems in Greece.

Prosehe Stella and Dimitris and continue keeping us informed.

Without Remorse

"Without remorse the special guard accuses his victim after his death for illicit behaviour. He's still shooting at him although Alexis Grigoropoulos is already dead. Epaminondas Korkoneas in his 11 page long defense statement does NOT apologize even once for the loss of the 15 year old, who died as a result of his own actions, but instead blames the dead boy for ilicit behaviour-Dimitris mentioned this before-he even claims that Alexis was barred from school and again accuses him for illicit conduct.
Lawyers at Evelpidon (the main site of the courts in Athens) commented that of course the special guard could not have known at the time of the shooting those kind of details about the 15 year old's life which in any case do not pose a credible defense for his own unlawful actions and behaviour."
The school "Sholi Moraiti" where Alexis was attending until a year ago-he had moved the last year to another school- gave out a statement that refutes these kind of accusations from E.K. and states that Alexis' behaviour and relations with other students and his teachers was always very good at all times.

(from greek newspaper)

Much thanks to Stella and Dimitris.
Take care.
Massive respect to the youth of Greece.

5 minutes ago students from the nearby school were demonstrating in front of my street with direction probably the main square in Kipseli and/or a police station, haven't heard this mentioned yet on radio-they were Beautiful!!!
