Are you under surveillance? Police monitor 9000 activists

It's pretty disappointing that I'm far too boring for the pigs to bother with. Unless they put everyone who marched against the Iraq war under surveillance. No wonder the police overtime bill's so big if that's the case.

...and all this spookery don't come cheap...

MI6, MI5 and Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) will see an inflation-busting increase in their combined £1.9 billion budget, underlining the Government’s concern over the growing terrorist threat following the Woolwich attack.
Police spending on counter-terrorism will also be protected and will rise in line with inflation.
The percentage increase in the budgets of the intelligence agencies – at more than three per cent in addition to inflation – will be the largest of any item of government spending including the NHS, schools and international development.
It will lead to the agencies receiving about another £100 million in funding annually from 2015.

I am sure I have asked and have had an answer to this before but is it possible to find out if the police have a file on you and then, what is in the file? I assume you could do an FOI request, is that right?

See tufty's post, which I quoted three posts above you.

There are files and there are other files and if they don't want you to know what they know they won't tell you.

I think you might be able to access some of the information stored about you by the police via the 'Data Protection Act 1998', as for intelligence agencies I am sure they're exempt from the act. Here is a link to the legislation :

I told this story on U75 once before but perhaps it suits this thread.

I was out one Sunday photographing around the local place and not thinking anything of it I stopped near an army base where I walked around a bit taking photos of the trees mainly.

Monday morning there was a knock on my door and two police detectives in plain clothes were there, they asked me if I had been near xyz army base, I said possibly, they asked if I had been taking photographs I said probably, they asked if they could see the photographs, I said I don't see why not, so I had them in the house, and showed them the images from that session. They seemed satisfied and duly left.

Big Brother is watching :hmm:

I should ask to see a warrant next time if I were you. I'm not saying there was anything illegal in your house but as a matter of general principle like.

Actually there was a slightly embarrassing image on my computer, a lets call it an exotic studio shot (just adult stuff) and I was slightly wrong-footed because they saw it before I could close the window.

Well I did have a thought, gosh lucky I don't smoke hash anymore! but do you think I really should have asked for a warrant? At the time I just thought it easier to show them the photographs.
and phone the local constabulary to see whether they are in fact police acting on orders
Would you do that Pickman's? honestly?

yes. wouldn't you or would you simply let a couple of clowns in some uniform bowl about your house?
I am afraid I am rather used to the police pretty much doing whatever they want despite my wishes, it was the police that forcibly took me away when I was ill, twice. Added to that I don't really know my rights.

was taking photos on the banks of the thames one summers evening around 5 years ago with a mate...was on the beach near the london eye photographing the scenery from a different angle. Noticed a helicopter above us for 20 mins or so but assumed it was a tourist thing until 6 police and 7 or 8 pretend police called us up and demanded to know what we were doing and stated that we were being stopped and questioned under the anti terrorism act. One of the old bill then spoke to someone on his radio and looked up to the helicopter than then left. I kind of raised an eyebrow and he said they'd been watching as as we'd been acting suspiciously...I asked how and they said by taking photos of london landmarks like bridges!
The funny thing was that one of the old bill looked at my photos and started to compliment us on them and then started to give us tips and explained that he was a keen photographer. Was a very surreal evening

next time you are unwell try the nhs, who provide a more humane service.

weltweit

aye. if it happens again, try get yourself to a place of safety that isn't a a police station (so a&e, pretty much).
aslo useful bit of information: if the police are trying to pick you up for being 'unwell', they can (in theory) only get your from your home/private property with a warrant - according to 'how it's supposed to work', they need a section 135 + a warrant if you're on private property. they can use ection 136 and no warrant required if you're in a public place.

in theory :)

fwiw, i knew my rights. but they told me i didn't have any, and then dragged me down my stairs/out the house in handcuffs (i didn't want to have them in my home, or to go with them, because i didn't trust them).
/offtopic
gggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Theory is all very well, I was on my property when they arrested me and two or three of them searched the house without any kind of warrant that I could see, the front door was already open.

The second time four of them carried me out shoulder high!

I don't regret, I needed help at the time although I didn't know it.

glad to hear you' were/are ok, weltweit.

a friend of a friend of a friend etc etc . had a partner who had a bit of a uniform thing, and a bit of a wrongheaded fantasyhotness for policemen. so he decided to make her fantasies come true.
so yeah. he got hold of a uniform (no questions asked, taps nose etc*), and then "raided" her house at stupid AM while she was asleep. daft fucker didn't realised that she might actually take it seriously.. :D
((northern hippies and their fetishes))

*i haven't actually sat and thought about that bit before. time to get me 'hmm'face out.

A few years ago at the Anarchist bookfair in London I got stopped by two undercovers outside just driving out in their unmarked car. They flashed some pic of someone they were apparently after (sounded like made up bollocks, why would they not be in uniform, happens to coincide with 'radical' bookfair etc). Anyway, started trying to get intel on me but I refused to give them anything but the bare minimum. They had already 10-20 names of people written down. They pretended to do a check on me with a radio, it was all nonsense. Just standard/routine intimidation or something at these kinds of events I suppose. What was interesting though was that they specifically mentioned not to worry cos there is no database or anything that you're going on. It was bizarre at the time cos it came from nowhere. I immediately thought well if that was the case why would you say that? Well now it turns out there is a database, shock horror. And we're probably not being told the half of it.
