Apples.

Sometimes shared bits of name mean they're related, not sure if that's the case with Pink Whatever or not.

Apple names are brilliant. I love the contrast between all the old names like Peasgood's Nonsuch and Chiver's Delight and one of my favourite apples name-wise which is just called Gavin :D

Gavin! Awesome. I hope there's one called Dave. That's my go to name for anything. Chiver is Romany slang for person, I think. There's a rich seam of goodness there. I love stuff like that.

Garum, is that you?

Dunno mate, could be. I find anything like that to be fascinating. Like, those barges that recycle plastic from the oceans and rivers.

they have egremont russets among the british apples for sale here - good ones too, if on the small side.

I favour Jazz of the imported apples about atm, but tbh my faves are the ones you can only get for a short season and who's names I never remember. Cox's are the best of the workhorse UK varieties.

You never see them in the shops but Scrumptious apples are fantastic, despite their stupid twee name.

After that it's got to be Egremont Russet. They're only available at the time they should be available, in the autumn

They're only about early in the season but I've seen them in a few supermarkets, Waitrose definitely had them last year.

Stored egremonts are usually around until around this time but last year seems to've been really bad for them, they were late coming in and mostly disappeared by Feb

Truly scrumptious?

We've got four apple trees and a pear tree in our garden. The pick of the bunch is definitely the Egremont Russet tree - absolutely delicious apples.

I’m pretty sure I said this on the other apple thread too, but the best apple is a Lord Lambourne, hands down. It’s like the platonic apple that all the others are shadows of aspects of. Really need to find someone who grows it though, as shops tend not to stock it because it doesn’t store well at all - needs to be eaten within a day or two of being picked.

Just for a heartbeat, I thought that said tambourine. That would win if it was called that and I would forgive it any foibles, even if it was like a Golden Delicious.

"What's that you're eating?"

"Lord Tambourine."1

Not Tim Apple. Just apples. Like the Pink Lady, the best apple anyone could ever eat. Tell me I'm right, I'll wait. Is that what the young people say? I won't actually wait. I don't have a million years like those young fuckers.

Anyway. Apples. Let's all agree that the Pink Lady is the best. What's second?

Oh and there wasn't an apple thread. There was something in the computer forum and then Apple Day. Say it like you've just found a bee in your apple.
More than you shake a twig at...and I should know!

The answer is a cox.

No, not me...it's the National Fruit Collection
Just happen to have the same name.

The National Fruit Collection? I feel like I was sat in the driving seat, confidently motoring along down the road and then the car suddenly took a sharp left turn and now I'm wondering what just happened? The National Fruit Collection you say? Go on then, I'll play. Is it made of wax or what's the deal?

I like Cox's

Correct.

Also, when you are shopping with your beloved (remember shopping together?!) you can make endless "l love Cox" jokes, which you will suddenly stop doing after noticing some very small ones, and triumphantly turning round to your loved one to loudly say "look at my tiny Cox!' to a complete stranger of slightly advancing years who is most definitely not amused.

Not usually a fan of the greasiness that makes apples good keepers but it's not noticeable on eating these. Proper strong, sweet flavour and just the right amount of crunch and juice.

apples are something you have to buy organic in the supermarket or else they taste like cardboard IME

anyone know somewhere to buy farmers apples in London? there are hundreds of varieties grown in the uk yet there are about 3 for sale in the supermarkets
i eat an apple a day, sometimes two <big part of my diet
