Apple TV+ recommendations?

Fantastic episode this week (5th) though. Brutal stuff.

Trying to find online the percentage of aircrews who completed their 25-mission tour (and wasn’t it 30 missions for the RAF?), but I can’t imagine many made it :(

I've just started to watch Constellation, starring Noomi Rapace. Gets off to a good start. A little bit about it in this interview in the Guardian.

Somewhat annoyingly, though, around 15 minutes in to the first episode, I think I've already realised/guessed an important plot point/twist.

that child actress is bloody awful tho, incredibly irritating to watch

Now you mention it, yes, I agree.

The part is played by twins Davina Coleman and Rosie Coleman. Perhaps their casting was less to do with their acting ability and more to do with them being twins who could comply with the filming schedule, ie restrictions on number of hours worked by child actors?

The New Look. Highly recommended. I was expecting a kind of biopic along the lines of Halston starring Ewan McGregor, but instead it's more like of a House of Gucci-style wtf I had no idea that happened storyline!

Although in this case, the surprise storyline isn't family member murder, it's the sub-plot about Christian Dior's sister (played by Maisie Williams) being a member of the French resistance. And Coco Chanel (played by Juliette Binoche) having a significant role too. Albeit I wasn't surprised by the Chanel Nazi collaborator storyline, as I'd seen a documentary or docudrama about that on... I think it was BBC2... a while back.

It highlighted the moral dilemmas about collaboration. I'm sure everyone thinks they wouldn't have collaborated, but what if a family member was captured and collaborating could secure their release? What about talking or not talking? Who would betray someone else in order to save themselves? How strong is the survival instinct? When does it kick in? Fascinating stuff. Not black and white at all, lots of ethical dilemmas and moral ambiguities.

Also lots of really strong performances, from Binoche, Williams, the guy who plays Dior.

Just finished Criminal Record. It was okay, plenty of interesting/relevant things to say about modern policing and racial identity in London but I thought the ending was a bit muddled. Wasn't clear to me how much of the back story had been revealed to the young police officer before the denouement. And appeared to set things up for a series 2.

I just come onto this thread to see if anyone else was watching masters of the air, besides the name I really think the show is great

They’re actually going to be showing it at a cinema near me in parts spread out over the next year and I’m tempted to try and see it there

I'm tempted to start on it just to see how they balance out showing the suicidal insanity of the USAAF's daylight bombing campaign while still giving a tribute to the very, very brave men involved in it.

Historical bias aside, it is an excellent WWII series imo. The aerial battles are edge of the seat stuff, and not just because of the visual effects/ cinematography.

This week’s episode (8th) is largely devoted to a USAF wing composed chiefly of African-American crews. So whereas the show continues to royally ignore the contribution and sacrifice of the RAF in the campaign, at least this episode features non-white US personnel for once and lightly touches on the institutional racism built into the US forces.

Anyway, while the show should have been told in 6 rather than 9 episodes, it is still very good overall.

Granted it would be nice to see some of these shows about British units etc, however the shows with their budget need to appeal to the American audiences, and let’s be honest if there was one about British units you’d have a bunch of flagshaggers frothing at the mouth about some kind of “woke-ism” for daring to include Indian soldiers or something.

I’m enjoying The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin a lot more than I thought I would. Not every joke lands but on the whole a very amusing sitcom. It’s no Blackadder (or tries to be), but as far as the comedy value is concerned, it is significantly funnier than the likes of Ghosts, though to be fair that is not a fair comparison as the latter is more of a comedy/ drama-ish combo.

Won’t be for everyone, and if you find Noel Fielding annoying you’ll hate it, but even if you don’t take my word for it, a 86% Rotten Tomatoes rating is not something a shit series would get.

I just read the book this is based on, and it's one of the best military histories I've ever read.

Anyway, we got Apple TV because Mrs Idris was very taken with Slow Horses when she saw it a friends place.

And it is very good, with its cast of unknowns and familiar faces, and we've been kept on the edge of our seats so far.

But - and I'm not going to say this to Mrs. I - it's basically Harry Potter, isn't it? With the young lad who plays River Cartwright as the boy wizard, flatulent Gary Oldman as Dumbledore, etc. etc.

The lad who plays Cartwright also bears an intriguing resemblance to Owen Jones, make of that what you will.

I'd read the book that one's based on, and was glad I only spent 2 euro on it in a charity store - but this is one of the best spy series I've seen for a long time, much better than Netflix's Berlin Station from a few years back.

We just watched the Steve Martin documentary - this is Steve Martin from back when he used to be funny. The American Billy Connolly? Or a one-man Monty Python? You be the judge.

I signed up to watch Slow Horses, very good but not as amazing as lead to believe bar Gary Oldman.
Then watched Bad Sisters, which I very much enjoyed.
But now can't seem to see anything else to make it worth staying on for.
Gave The Morning Show a try but honestly couldn't give a fuck.
Tried Severance but it's so slow without much character development.
Everything else recommended looks like sci fi, which I don't enjoy.
Anything else or am I done here?

Try a bit harder with Severance, it’s great.

Otherwise, no, you’ve pretty much done it.

Ted Lasso.

Silo, High Desert, Shining Girls and Platonic are worth a try.
Quite a few films up there too - Still, Napoleon, Fingernaiils, Wolfwalkers, The Tragedy Of Macbeth, On The Rocks, Cha Cha Real Smooth, Boys State, Girls State, Hala, The Pigeon Tunnel.
They have fewer tv shows than Netflix but their shows tend to be better made and written. Quality over quantity.

Is Shining Girls a supernatural thing?

nagapie if you need an incentive to watch Severance, Urban Industries will throw you a music/dance experience when you have completed 75% of the first season.
