And next, Syria?

There's chatter from people in the know on Twitter that there has been a mass army defection in Homes and all hell has been let lose

There's another story going about on Twitter about why it all kicked off big time in Homs today and that it was a response to pro-regime types going into schools and demanding that the kids attend a pro-Assad rally

Shell have emergency evacuated the country, which is pretty fucking significant. Expats are back in the uk now

Very good report on Newsnight. The woman who was defending the regime after the film was incredible. Who's she working for?

U.S. and Iran discuss Syrian crisis in back-channel diplomacy: report

Iranian and U.S. government representatives have discussed ways to prevent Syria from descending into bloody chaos should the regime of embattled President Bashar al-Assad collapse, French daily newspaper Le Figaro reported on Sunday, quoting a Syrian opposition figure in exile.

The paper said the back-channel diplomacy between American and Iranian diplomats occurred at two meetings, one at the end of August and one at the beginning of September, but it did not indicate where.

“They spoke about putting in place a high military council on the Egyptian model, with generals running the country and responsible for making senior strategic options,” the paper quoted the Syrian opposition figure as saying.

According to a French diplomat in charge of the Syrian crisis quoted in the report, Iranian officials have adapted to the idea of a new government in Damascus and “even to a change at the top of the regime.”

The diplomat said that Iran was keen to avoid a civil war in Syria, as it could spill over across its border. The paper said the relationship between Tehran and Damascus was not balanced, which explains the influence Iran has on the regime in Damascus....

its going to turn into a iraq:( even with out foriegn troops on the streets :(
vicous tryanny goes down hard lots and lots of scores to be settled

Supposedly there are a fair few Syrian army deserters who have set up a Free Syrian Army - and attacked loyal forces on more than one occasion. Civil war is on.

The regime looks less stable and sure of continuing than at any time since the uprising started at the beginning of the year.

The Arab League were probably calculating seeing how Syria would go. I doubt they would think of publicly announcing suspending Syria if they thought that Assad had a realistic chance of staying in power. They must feel pretty confident that he is fucked for them to commit to call for Syria to be suspended.

There dictators always play the peace and stability card to their supports both internally and externally but Assad can't play that now and he now doesn't have much left in his hand of any value

We all know it's going on, i'm still finding this channel 4 documentary extremely shocking. The dehumanization shown from Assads forces is Nazi-esque.

Don't think i'm up to watching that, the article is horrble and shockin enough at a skim read.

Seriously horrendous. How anybody can think non-violence is a tactic in the face of that is beyond me, those people need a bullet in the skull.

Yea that article is dreadful. But If you look back to the beginning of the thread there's some pretty dreadful footage purporting to be of of Bashar's brother Maher, stepping amongst corpses in a mosque stormed by the military whilst taking pictures on his mobile phone. Then there's the dumping of corpses off of a bridge. Subsequently I've been under no illusions about the brutality that is going on there for quite some time.

there's this in the L.A. times:

Meanwhile fast forward to now and, as a riposte to the Arab League's for requests to observers on the ground:

The revolution, which is now taking place in Syria, is not just a political revolution. It seems it will bring with it revelations about the scandalous life style of some Arab leaders and princes. Bouthaina Shaaban – Syrian presidential adviser and senior government minister has reportedly threatened Arab rulers to expose their sexual scandals by publishing video clips which will indicate \their intimate preferences.

This threat was made amid the tough position adopted by some Arab leaders against Bashar Assad's regime. According to some reports, Shaaban hinted that the Syrian intelligence holds a number of films recorded by hidden cameras in hotels and houses rented to some senior Arab officials in Syria with the aim of blackmailing them....
