Amazon's 'The Boys' - fighting superheroes gone bad with an awesome Karl Urban Cockney accent

He pronounces 'twat' as 'twot' in films these days.

Still. A bit better than having a better looking Jermaine from the flight of the conchords getting the gig. I am enjoying it though, Ive only just got to the bit where the girl orgasms so hard on the guy's face it explodes. Never seen that before, not even on porn sites. Looking forward to more.

Rule 34, you didn't look hard enough.

When Outlaw King came out on netflix last year...Scots had a great time saying who was a natural Scots speaker and who was acting...but it was just for fun. 99% of people outside Scotland wouldn't have known/cared.

The final epsiode of The Boys S2 was great...maybe partly because I was forced back to weekly episodes which is rare these days. There's no doubt that Anthony Starr seems nigh-on perfect as Homelander...the way he can show such depth and identity just from facial expressions is startling.

This is true. But Mr Urban is an accomplished Hollywood actor. Looks like he couldn't be arsed prepping for this or maybe is blatantly taking the piss.

Then again the kiwi accent Kiera Knightley put on for Everest perhaps is possibly worse.

Regardless. his performance is fucking hilarious, knowingly or not.

I’ve never found unconvincing accents that intrusive anissue myself. It’s one of those things you have to take with the good in films and tv series.. So long as the actor can otherwise act and delivers a good performance, and they’re not portraying a historical character, it shouldn’t be anything more than a side issue talking point
Imo. But each to their own of course.

it’d better

Yeh, good call. he's good. So fuck it. I'm only just at the spice girls episode but his bit in that had me in stitches...

The whole thing is a piss take. His accent is perfect, I think.

Having watched a few more episodes I'm inclined to degree. He's actually sounding more like Murray every episode. Barely attempting the cockney. It's a piss take. And it's pretty funny.

I watched both seasons over the last five days. Enjoyed it a lot, Anthony Starr as Homelander is outstanding, what an utterly loathsome (cunty) villain/hero. Both Hugh and Annie/Starlight are genuinely likeable as the star crossed lovers, I kept rooting for them. The only character where I rolled my eyes is Billy Butcher and it's not just the accent. I'm just tired of that type of macho cockney geezer character. At least Annie gets to call him out on his bullshit by season 2. The other thing which always bothers me,, is when Toronto is asked to play New York, which it never does convincingly, but it's an understandable budgetary measure. I agree with T&P that at times the pace was a little slack. Otherwise pretty good, though not as good as the Watchmen tv series.

Gonna start S2 of this soon. Just waiting for my Netflix sub to run out for the month, then pick Amazon up for a month... Him that plays Negan in TWD is meant to be joining the cast soon (I think).

:(

I just looked it up and read that he lobbied for a role on twitter and they may accommodate him, which would be stupid. They should add characters because they fit the plot, not because an actor wants to be in the show. I hated his perma-smirking one-note performance on The Walking Dead.

Just finished series II - was a grower, found it bit hard to care after 2-3 episodes but it got more compelling by degrees.

I totally predicted that
Ryan would put down/kill Stormfront when she threatened his mum

Anthony Starr - and TBF, Karl Urban - are both marvellously horrible.

Conclusion had my other half wondering
what the head-exploding congresswoman's game was? I presume she wants Voight to have their resources passed into government control - under her management, of course

I found Kimiko to be a boring character and just forwarded the talking scenes with her brother.

Homelander is the best character on the show. perfect casting. I like Deep's power but it would be an awful power to have- to hear animals suffering

I don't know if you've seen Banshee, but Antony Starr (Homelander) is fucking superlative in it.

Doesn't sound like my sort of thing, but I'm going to check it out on the strength of his performance in this. I didn't clock it so much over the course of the first season, but his vulnerability is so convincingly sketched out that I was genuinely excited to see where he'd be going next.

On the subject of The Boys actors giving good performances elsewhere, Aya Cash aka Stormfront gives a fucking amazing performance in Scare Me (the Josh Ruben film, there’s another one of the same name). Together with a handful of other films, worth doing the 7-day free Shudder trial to check out.

Kimiko's brother's accent is well wrong, apparently.

I was late to the party as ever. Could a passing mod bin my duplicate thread please.

Yeh. Really well cast, everyone. I hate superhero shit but this was brilliant.

Imagine that superhero shit is grim.

Love the genre, though. Whether it's played straight or for laughs.

If it's the latter, check out Kick Ass, Deadpool and the latest Suicide Squad offering.
