thoughts and prayers, please...

:p
The horror! :(

So. I just got a refund from EasyJet (who made it VERY easy). But I’ve already claimed the cost of the ticket as an expense from work. Now. Who amongst you would just pocket the refund, and who would volunteer its return to their workplace?
Depends really. What are the chances of your boss finding out? :hmm: :D

If it gets reported in the news that easyjet are refunding everyone you might have to cough up :(

I'd email the relevant people at work and ask them how to deal with it. It's not like they won't know, and only an insane person would risk a well-paid job for the cost of a flight.

They'd probably just deduct it from next months wages (assumming they'd already paid it you before you'd told them).
I suspect that would be the case at quite a lot of workplaces.
I got a years free bus travel because our payroll department screwed up - and still have not caught me.

Though slightly different to kabbes' situation as that was payroll screwing up and and I didn't notice their error for months.

Does it make a difference to your thoughts if I tell you that there is zero chance of anybody following up on it, checking it or knowing about it if I don’t return the refund?
What about your hotel room?

What if HMRC investigated you, and asked why you didn't declare this income on your tax return?

Now we’re into the important stuff. But I don’t think credit card refunds count as income, while my expenses will be automatically reported to Deloitte, who produce my excessively complicated self-assessment tax form on my behalf (as a result of having two different employers across two different jurisdictions)

No.

I'd still think it wouldn't be the right thing to do but I'd have some sympathy if you really needed the money. But you earn a lot and presumably don't.

Out of interest would people inform their employer if they made a claim via delay repay on the railways?
Yes.

Sue, I salute your honesty and fair play. Truly, the empire was built on the back of such indefatigable moral rectitude. (And by bastards who slaughtered millions of innocents, of course)

Whether the refund came via a credit card or some other means is surely irrelevant. The material position is that you've been given money from your employer ostensibly for the reimbursement of an expense, but there was actually no such expense and you've simply trousered the funds for personal gain with the intention of defrauding your employer and avoiding income tax.

If it's a one-off occurrence you could probably feign ignorance but if you're in the habit of doing it you could be in trouble.
