1945: The Savage Peace: very very disturbing television

True poles didn't get to straf Germany before or after though. The sad fact is they may well have shot up some POW columns in their desire to kill as many germans as possible. People forget the Germans were the first victims of the Nazis and lots of innocents died fueling the flames of vengeance.

People also forget the high level of collaboration there was , particularly in countries like Bulgaria, czechslovakia , Hungary etc who'd been fascist allied states at the beginning .And what better way to convince the advancing red army you were always a good sort by showing how fanatical your hatred of Germans was .

There was also a lot of inter-faction rivalry and revenge going on, the communist factions in a lot of the occupied countries had been hounded and vilified by the establishment for years even before the war. Topple the government/authority and you saw a lot of very angry people with guns, half of them trained by Stalin to do what he wanted them to do.
