Birkbeck university

shallow kitty
I'm going to be starting a part time psychology degree at Birkbeck uni in two weeks. I was just wondering if any other Urbanites have either been to Birkbeck, or are going there now, or have friends who've been there, or whatever, and what you guys think of the place?

I'm kinda nervous about going back to education, but really looking forward to it too... My brain has been rotting in a really easy job for far too long now!!

Hmmm this reminds me I should go look at that perspectus for evening courses i've got...I know a couple of people who did courses there, both said they enjoyed it and got alot out of it (both were mature students).

i think quite a few people on here are

i've been there for the last couple of years doing part time stuff, i like it, was a bit daunting at first as i'd never went to university or anything like that and just left school at 16, but now i've got into it i really enjoy it, nice mix of people you meet there as well, not quite as homogenous as your typical just left school and into uni student types

their library is pretty modern and useful as well, all in all a good place to be

Hi mangakitten.

Have we met? I know spiralx from the Drome. Anyway, I've only heard good things about Birkbeck. There's quite a few urbaintes that have done the psych degree there. I'll try an wave one of them down.

Maybe see you in the bar. I'm starting a maths masters there at the end of the month.

A woman called Sascha Rose visited me when doing some research into Self-harm and interviewed me for her project. She was well fit. I think she teaches there, can't remember that well though, been a couple of years since we met.

i think the bar is pretty shite there actually, would rather make the short walk along to ulu for a few pints

although perhaps a certain poster on these boards may have plans to inject some new life into it

I did a PgCert Finance there last year. Was very good but bloody hard work with a job as well but got my onto my MSc course at Imperial, wouldn't have had a hope of getting on without doing the PgCert first.

The lectures were generally very good although they were a bit slack about putting lecture notes etc online which is a pain as most people with jobs are bound to miss a few lectures. They've recently refurbished a load of the lecture theatres which are now very comfy! My course was very international, ended up friends with people from all over the world which was great.

Anyway, would really recomend it, I had a briliant time.

little edge and I finished that part time psychology degree this summer.. it is fantastic. so much so that i've quit my job and in two weeks i start a full time psychology ph.d. at Birkbeck :D

so i will probably be one of your stats demonstrators  ;)

pm and we can meet up in the bar and we'll tell you all about it..

in fact, think we should have a birkbeck u75 bar meet in any case

the bar staff were pretty abysmal last year and it's not the nicest venue.. but it is still a good bar as it is the people that make a bar

and in any case some of us mature students find ULU a bit young :p

Well...

I did my PhD there, & found the staff unhelpful & the library crap. If you're on a taught course you should be alright though.

come on, couldn't have been that bad could it, fair enough if you have the luxury of being able to be a full time student, but for thousands of londoner's who want to at least do something on a part time basis, it offers a lot

I wasn't a full time student, but part-time, totally self-financed, as it happens. Don't get me wrong: in principle it is a great idea. But when I couldn't attend the degree ceremony due to personal commitments, they never replied to my request for another date.

yes PHD though

i'm talking about continuing education, certificates, diplomas that kinda thing, obviously way too lowly to be picked up on your radar, but for some, myself included, it's been a reliable and useful place, that's enabled us to pursue things we enjoy

They aren't lowly at all--I did my early exams at night school having left school at 16 actually.

that's exactly what i'm doing now, i've no idea where they might lead, but birkbeck offers a useful way for people to enter and do these things without having to commit to 3-4 year type courses from the word go, it lets you build and gain confidence in these areas, which for me personally was never offered to me at school, hence the reason for getting out of there as soon as i could

she certainly is ;)

she may have left now though :(

She was a very attractive and lovely woman.

I am not sure whether she was studying for a PhD or something, but she was/is a lecturer of some kind at Birkbeck. She travelled to my town for her research, interviewing me about my experiences through the charity Mind.

I've applied for an Opera Peformance Diploma course that starts in two weeks. And they haven't got back to me yet!

And I'm going on holiday on Friday and will miss the first week if I get it. I guess with adult ed it may be usual to go right down to the wire, especially with courses like this where there will be a lot of competition, but this is pushing it a bit! It does have rather a bearing on the shape of the next 9 months of my life, so I'll be ringing them again if I don't hear by Weds - I did ask last week and they said results of the auditions would be out this coming week.

I'm not sure... what's your real name? :D me and spiralx have been together for nearly 2 years now, so if you've seen him much in the past two years, then we probably have!

Wow, it's cool that so many of you have had good experiences with it. I hope you hear from them soon, Cloo! Your course sounds really cool, I hope you get onto it.

Yes, I'd definitely be up for a U75 Birkbeck meet-up! It would be nice to meet you all... I don't really know anyone from this board at the moment.

*Waves at Mangakitten*

I start a Bsc in Information Systems and Management on the 4th October at Birkbeck. Like you am both nervous and excited. Four years seems a hell of a long time though and I will be 32! That just sounds really old to me.

Do we get an NUS card for cheap rail fares at Brirkbeck and can I open a student account and get a huge overdraft facility?

Hiya! I'm starting on the 5th, a day after you. 4 years does seem like a very long time... I'll be 32 when it finishes as well!

I'm not sure about an NUS card... I got a Birkbeck student card in the post a while ago that doesn't say anything about the NUS on it... I know you can use the ULU student facilities, but I'm not sure about NUS... I'll have a look on the website!

I've just read this about NUS cards on the website:

How do I get my NUS Card?
You need to bring your College ID card (Library Card) and a passport size photo to Students Union Shop (basement of the next extension site; near the main entrance). Card-issuing between 12pm to 2pm and 5pm to 9pm during term time. Students of Faculty of Continuing Education, the cost of FCE’s Ordinary Membership is 15 pounds (concessions 10 pounds). You need to present proof that you are on your course. If you are enrolled centrally, the Faculty’sreceipt will be fine. If you are not centrally enrolled. Please have your local centre’s course receipt stamped and signed by the Faculty office. You need to bring the above proof of registration, two photographs and your membership fee to the Student Union Office (2pm to 9pm, term time).

Good, eh? :D

Cool. Now I just want one of those student accounts and a £2,000 overdraft. I want a new plasma TV!

I take it you have to be a full time student for those though.
