"You're just not worth it."

These scum can't help themselves, can they?

Her twitter tag pulled a guffaw from me.

Again the 'Questions audience largely favour bashing labour's criticism of Freud's words!

I don't recognise or understand this situation at all. I think it's grotesque. Have people really become convinced that the only worth a person can have is in service to an employer - no matter how shitty the work or how low the paid. Are people really saying that, instead of letting people live lives of dignity with all the support they need (and we aren't talking mansions and helipads and tennis courts), they must be herded into employment and then, because of their limited capacity (according to Freud's supporters), be paid less than everyone else - nevermind how shitty the minimum wage already is.

This is pure ideological poison. Again the capitalists and the government have manipulated people to thinking they are doing them a kindness. Just the same as IDS saying that a broken WCA, the (flawed) replacement of DLA with PIP, the scrapping of the ILF, the Work Programme, and UC are all about helping people and raising them out of their mire with dignity!

If disabled people get £2 an hour the rest will presumably come from Universal Credit, which means they will be subject to the conditiosn thereof - ie having to finda full paid job that of course noone will be incentivised to give. This is just another bailout to the whining boss class that seems to set the agenda these days.

Awesome Wells I didn't watch QT but I talked to some people about it at work and they were all disgusted, including a few people who aren't usually all that sympathetic. QT audiences aren't exactly representative.

If they get away with this, what's next? Different levels of minimum wage for different educational levels? Only those with doctorates eligible for the full minimum wage? The National Minimum Wage does away with all that. If someone's worth employing, they're worth paying.

Over the 10K mark now!
Kind of already the case with lower minimum wages for under 18s and a disgraceful £2.65/hr for apprentices, with an ever widening idea of what an apprenticeship actually means.
Not that that makes this idea any less grim of course

Apparently lots of parents with disabled children have been ringing the BBC, etc basically endorsing Freud's ideas, taking no cognisance that nothing this regime has done has benefited D/P, Cameron even said DLA would be protected under his Govt and of course they closed down the rest of the Remploy factories/units.

My call centre job for a bank (for which I get 7.60 an hour) has started advertising the same job I do for apprentice wages. I have seen jobs which I have done before in restaurants for minimum wage advertised on apprentice wages too.

The training at my current job basically consists of being patronised and filling out a couple of flip charts, there is no fucking way that you can justify calling it an 'apprenticeship'. It is purely a way to take taking advantage of working-class kids and pay them nothing for being telephony based punching bags for one of the biggest banks in the world.

Proper apprenticeships are where you spend four or five years learning to be a toolmaker, welder, electrician, fitter/turner etc with city & guilds, ONC or similiar qualifacations

I have no idea how representative they are ultimately, but I was referring to both the radio and tv iteration.

Having just listened to Any Answers as well, I'm no less outraged. Honestly, listen back to the first caller who was the mother of an autistic soon-to-be 19yo who said she'd happily pay an employer out of his benefits to take him on! She thinks he gets a 'lot' of benefits (and describes him as very autistic).

Another guy said he used to own a garage and paid £2 to a lad with a learning difgifficulty after his mother asked him to take him on. When asked if he could have paid more, the guy said the lad couldn't really work int he motor trade.

Anyone who thinks that disability isn't a class issue should have to listen to that.

This is just victim blaming

"look, sonny, here's two shiny round coins for you! You've earned them all by yourself! Aren't you a brave little soldier...does he take sugar?"

What do you mean? I'm not victim blaming anyone, I'm saying that if she thinks that his benefits are so overly generous then she is probably in a position where she can top them up with her own money.

I wasn't referring to you, but to Lord Fraud and those like him.

Labour calls Commons vote over Lord Freud comments on disabled workers
Shadow ministers say it is disgraceful that David Cameron has not removed Freud from his post as welfare minister

not sure how this will go, the Independent came out basically in support of Freud last week, but good on them, but it also must mean they will now have to draw a line under their previous 'reforms' shutting Remploy, Atos, etc,

Why would it mean that? They aren't going to do any such thing, all they are going to do is continue to behave like the Tories but without being quite as obvious about their attitudes as Freud, meaningless stunts like this give them cover to do that while saying that they support the disabled.

I think that's a bit over the top.

There is a difference between them, not enough over all granted. For instance Labour under Brown brought in David Fraud, but it was the Tories, after he jumped ship to save his skin, that put him in the house of lords. Now he's part of the furniture and getting rid of him simply means he gets to be a Lord without a brief.

It is important to get rid of the Tories to get rid of filth like this.
