Your daily cat and kitten news

I've just looked it up and aggression is a listed potential but uncommon side effect of the cyclosporine treatment - hopefully it will either wear off quickly or the vet can give him something to help him calm down until it wears off (was it injection or pills?)

Poor Jocky and poor you too, that's difficult to deal with.
Yeh,I only know cos I just looked it up! Bloody hope it wears off a bit by the morning. It's a thin syrup/serum, I mix it with Lickylix. Thank you. My adrenaline hit the roof.

One thing I've noticed is that vets don't seem to give you the information sheet for drugs they prescribe unless you get a full pack of something and the info sheet is in the packaging - if you just get 1 blister pack of something, or an injection is given, or a bottle with pills or liquid medication, you aren't given the information sheet about side effects and contra-indications.
Why though? I would rather make an informed decision. If I'd known this might happen, I don't think I would have chanced it. Animal aggression proper shits me up.

It's like when I was prescribed the constipation pills for Jakey, it was just 8 pills in a bottle with a sticker saying half a pill twice a day - I had to look it up online to realise it shouldn't be given close to other medications (eg. his fortekor) because something that affects gut motility could adversely affect uptake of other oral medication in the gut. Otherwise I'd have been inclined to give it at the same time, I looked it up to see what it was suitable for use for as I wasn't convinced and also wanted to check whether it should be given with food or on an empty stomach etc.

That would shit me up too, just imagining if my Jakey suddenly turned on me, I'd be very on edge and nervous and probably inconsolable.

I mean I google stuff anyway, I think though that a lot of the drugs they prescribe aren't for humans (even if the same drug, there are actually very strict regulations to keep them separate from the supply of medications for human use, in case of shortages) so the info provided is seen as being for the vet, not the patient, and there won't necessarily be an info sheet for each patient that a pack of medication is split between by the vet.

They should still advise people to look up the info sheet though, or provide a copy if someone is unable to do that themselves, IMO.

Thanks everyone, appreciate you hearing me.
Another two drugs you could ask the vet to consider for Jockey's condition are Depo Medrone and Apoquel, which isn't actually licensed for cats as yet (only dogs) but vets can still prescribe it if nothing else works.

One of my cats gets scabby skin on her back but a shot of Depo Medrone sorts it out for around 6 months or more. The vet said if it stops working at any point she would try the Apoquel.

Seems Jakey has some sort of abdominal mass, likely cancer.
Obviously with his advanced age and everything else going on with him there's no point in having it investigated or treated.

We've got an appointment to have him put to sleep on Monday :(

Oh I'm so, so sorry to hear this but when there's no more that can be done the last kindness you can give them is a pain free end.

I'm sure we'll all be thinking about you on Monday.

I've been kind of mentally prepared for a while, I'd have had it done today in all honesty and was ready for it if it seemed the best thing to do, but N wasn't ready - he's always very reluctant to discuss things like this although I have tried to raise the subject with him a few times over the last couple of weeks - so he needed a couple of days more to adjust to the idea so we booked for Monday as he has the night off instead of having to go to work afterwards. I do less well with the impending doom aspect of putting it off for a couple of days though, but we have to compromise a bit on important stuff. Plus we get to see our regular vet on Monday, he wasn't working today, and he's more familiar with Jakey and I want his opinion also (I mean I think the vet we saw today is right, just that Jakey has more history with Angel).
We have gabapentin for pain relief if it is needed at any point over the weekend.

Thanks. Waiting for a call from the vet. Very tempted to just stop all meds for a while, see how he goes on.

Ohhh, I'm so very sorry to read this. I hope you spend the weekend cuddling your little lad. He knows how much you love him. Lots of love to you xxxx

Really, really sorry to hear this about Jakey, Epona ... you've always cared & fought for his best interests at all times and your love and concern for him is evident in every post here. Give him an extra treat and cuddle from me this weekend. Strength & honour to you on Monday.

Jocky does this weird sexual thing with my fluffy couch blankie. Bites it, kneads it, then makes a shagging motion with his bum. Really unsettling, especially when I'm trying to win Uni Challenge.
Marvellous is the same, every morning without fail he comes into the bedroom, jumps up on the bed, bites down on the duvet cover or top sheet then does this little skuttle with his back legs like he’s running on the spot and after a cpl of minutes of this he appears to dry hump for about 20 seconds and once he has his happy finish he just jumps down off the bed, no hello or goodbye.

It seems like a few of our cats have got these little sexual peccadilloes. My dog likes to sleep at the foot of my bed at night and he's no bother but if Dallas, my LH tabby gets up there with him she won't give him any peace. She starts by pummeling him with her paws and then she starts nibbling him. He puts up with this for a while but when she starts licking his willie he gets fed up, jumps down and goes to sleep in the spare room!

So sorry to hear. This is exactly what we were told with Buttons (tumour on her liver) and we’re given an appointment for NYE. It’s heartbreaking and I really feel for you. No easy way to do this but just spoil the boy until you have to do the last great duty 😭. I know exactly how you feel and Mrs SFM is in tears. ❤️
