Your daily cat and kitten news

Unfortunately it seems my poor auld sod is pissing blood this evening, so it looks like we're off to the vet in the morning.
He's had UTIs before but it's unusual to see quite so much blood, I hope it's just a case of antibiotics to clear it up :(

Very sorry to hear that, hopefully antibiotics will help.

For what it's worth having also an elderly cat we try to make sure she drinks as much as possible using a couple of cat fountains with Brita filtered water and adding a little bit of warm water to her wet cat food.

Royal Canin do a good veterinary line of food some of which is on Amazon, perhaps they have a UTI specific line.

I do realise this is more prevalent in elderly male cats, best wishes for his full recovery.

Thanks, he's in final stage CKD so is on renal food and we give him subcutaneous fluids every other day as well as making sure he has plenty of water to drink.
Unfortunately bacterial UTIs are very common in cats at this stage of CKD, if it is that, it will be his 3rd bout this year (the vet says 5 or 6 UTIs a year is not unusual in cats with advanced CKD).
So I'm hoping it's that, the last couple of times a course of antibiotics cleared it up, but it's horrible for him. Could of course be a kidney infection, but I hope not, that would be more difficult to treat and might be the end of him bless his heart.

I hope your old girl is doing well, she's absolutely gorgeous and we need more pictures of her please :)

I adore OSH but they lack really great whiskers, theirs are average at best and tend to be fairly short and unremarkable, so I do enjoy seeing a lovely set on other cats.

Jakey's previous owner, his breeder (he's an ex-stud), once put a harness on him to see if he wanted to go for a walk, and apparently he went completely floppy like his legs had all stopped working :D

I've tried it all three of my girls when they were younger. They never took to it. Stick knows when I bring the harness out that it means going out so he walks toward the door, but isn't keen on putting the harness on. But once on, he is okay with it.

If she were a human she would be Pat Butcher from Eastenders all big earrings, big hair and too much bad gold jewelry. Her original owner was from down the Old Kent Road (literally) but now she has to make do with being a CCC, a Coastal Cockney Cat.
OMG she DOES look like Pat Butcher.

As I was laying worrying about the fact my cat seemed to be pissing blood, my brain dredged up a stored bit of info reminding me that vitamin B12 can cause the urine to turn red (which I googled to check) - Jakey (who seems perfectly OK btw, no distress, no back and forth to the litter tray - when he's had a UTI previously he's been in pain and practically begging me for help, we've had none of that tonight) has been having an oral B12 supplement on his food daily for just over a week.

I am still going to phone the vet in the morning of course, and I have collected a sample of urine that the vet could use to do a simple test for blood in it, but I have stopped actually panicking.

I mean it might still be a UTI, but there could be another reason for the pink/red urine.

Fingers crossed that’s the reason Epona . At least this possible option will help yiu get through the night.

Cat has just stormed off into the night and slammed the catflap behind him.
He wanted me to give him extra food, on top of the food he’s got on his plate. He likes the ritual of the offering, but he was out when I dished it up at normal o’clock.

I did give him his nightly treat, accompanied by the nightly-treat song. Then I went to bed. He came to check what I was up to, saw me in bed, and since he never ever gets fed as a consequence of me getting up, he realised I wasn’t to be wheedled into anything extra.

So he marched off and straight out the cat flap, letting it slam behind him with a clear resounding snap.

Thanks! He's just gone complete scoffage, hungry labrador style, on a bowl of food, and just before that did a big wee (on a white puppy pad) that was normal colour, he's not struggling or straining to piss or going to and from the litter tray or crying or asking me to go to the tray with him (sounds odd but he did this earlier in the year when he had a UTI and was having painful urination), so I'm hoping just an excess of B12 caused discolouration in the samples he left earlier in the day yesterday.

I'd rather get it checked anyway, so it's no bother to phone the vet first thing.

I love the things you say about your cat, he seems like a right character :)

That sounds promising.

Yeah, he’s pretty good at communicating his thoughts feelings and intentions. Even though he doesn’t have a meow. Or only a very small one that he uses rarely and only when very necessary.

It appears that I’m forgiven. Perhaps he just needed a walk around the block. He’s back, and settled on the end of the bed. I’ve got my foot out from under the covers and he’s got his back toes tucked under mine. I flex my toes, then he flexes his. And he's purring.
