Your daily cat and kitten news

As I was laying worrying about the fact my cat seemed to be pissing blood, my brain dredged up a stored bit of info reminding me that vitamin B12 can cause the urine to turn red (which I googled to check) - Jakey (who seems perfectly OK btw, no distress, no back and forth to the litter tray - when he's had a UTI previously he's been in pain and practically begging me for help, we've had none of that tonight) has been having an oral B12 supplement on his food daily for just over a week.

I am still going to phone the vet in the morning of course, and I have collected a sample of urine that the vet could use to do a simple test for blood in it, but I have stopped actually panicking.

I mean it might still be a UTI, but there could be another reason for the pink/red urine.
That's a good explanation. You're right to get it checked out anyway, but at least it doesn't necessarily spell disaster. Hope that's the case.

That sounds promising.

Yeah, he’s pretty good at communicating his thoughts feelings and intentions. Even though he doesn’t have a meow. Or only a very small one that he uses rarely and only when very necessary.

It appears that I’m forgiven. Perhaps he just needed a walk around the block. He’s back, and settled on the end of the bed. I’ve got my foot out from under the covers and he’s got his back toes tucked under mine. I flex my toes, then he flexes his. And he's purring.
Lilith farts in my face when she's really cross with me, usually as a punishment for staying out late or taking her to the vet! 🤣

Oh dear. Carrie had a definite actual fight with the fox last night. There was some shouting at 1am. Then at 6.30 I heard proper cat fight noises (as if wrestling with another cat), looked out and saw the fox heading off.

Carrie came in wet and muddy down one side and smelling of shit but with no obvious signs of injury.

What's also worrying is that I heard two bouts from further away and the final one was right by the back door, as if she was trying to get away and being chased. The fox walked off rather than legging it.

I put Scoot on the garden a couple of months ago and maybe that was working and has now worn off, so I will repeat. Perhaps I should try to use the curfew function on the catflap. Just as I'd washed the litter tray to put it away too.

Very worrying.

Poor Carrie, hope she's ok.

I'd definitely try the curfew. Ours locks for outbound traffic at 10.30pm and reopens at 6.30am, but they do take the piss if it's a nice night, and stroll in at midnight. It's a pain having to leave the tray out, but they've only used it once in months, dashing out as soon as they hear the click of the flap unlocking in the morning.

Well my arms and hands are scared for life and she has put me in A&E once back in 2015! She was very fierce and to stroke her belly even today is very risky, her claws are huge.
We use to have a cat called Kylie who was a bit like that. She had the unfortunate habit of getting on to the lap of anyone using the downstairs loo but when you wanted to get up again she'd attack you so you just had to sit there until she decided to get down of her own accord.

What's your motivation for the curfew?

I think she'd be furious. The app shows she's in and out all night. The Scoot takes a little while to work though

She still put up a fight though! Good girl!

Bloody Jocky comes IN for his toileting! I really hoped that when he was playing out all the time, he'd take to doing it out in the yard, but no. Great big steaming turds, just as tea is served sigh

You need a heavy duty water pistol thing or some powerful Nerf Gun. The wife chases them, they don't come back. Ever.
This might be a good idea for me to keep on my bedside table for the fox.

I've got some Scoot but you can't put it down when it's raining

This jumper is his.
Not mine.
His.

It’s a really soft warm cashmere. Got a few moth holes in it, and some words embroidered onto it in blue thread. It used to belong to someone else, who didn't want it, and said “Oh, take it home for Cat. If he doesn’t want it, get rid of it somehow”.

Sometimes he likes it laid out flat. Sometimes he prefers it to be rumpled up so he can tuck his nose into the folds, as in the photo.

I had a litter tray in the bathroom when Cat was really small. He’d come and have a shit at the same time as me.

As he got older and started spending more time outside, he’d run indoors to have a pee and then run out again. His good intentions and diligence broke my heart a little bit.

I waited about 4 or 5 months of unused litter tray before putting it away.

I’ve had cats who never used a litter tray until they got older. I can’t say I blamed them : who wants to go outdoors for a piss when it’s cold and damp? And other cars who never went outdoors, only ever used the litter tray indoors even though they spent time outdoors.

Cats is cats.

when i lived with the mogs, they tended not to use the litter tray (although some neighbours stopped talking to me)

although i kept it there - it got used very occasionally if the weather was bloody awful, and odd other occasions - maybe an 'i'm not going to make it outside in time' moment

I understand the concern about foxes and fighting and other cats etc.

In my experience, it takes a bit of time for a cat to develop their boundaries and make sure everyone in the neighbourhood - including foxes - knows the score. There will be months of negotiations, parlaying, treaties, testing the boundaries and so on. Then it settles down.

For me and my cats it’s never ended in disaster, male or female, large or small. One of the fiercest cats I ever lived with was a tiny little bitch-cat-from-hell who was easily the match of any tom dick or harry in the neighbourhood, foxes included.

And I've had to deal with wounds and the abscesses that can arise from wounds (cat spit can be right toxic). The Auld Warrior was in an ongoing war with an equally fierce opponent for almost a year before they finally made a truce that worked for them both. He was to the vet so often that they waived the consultation fee for him, so long as it was a bite wound. When the war was over, it was pax aeturna.

When Cat was little, he was bullied by the local Big Boys. I was worried he’d never be able to stand up to them (he’s a gentle soul). Then one day, he did, and after three months of scrapping and quarrelling and fighting and swearing matches, they stopped bothering him and they now don’t even come through the garden. Cat prevailed!

Depending on the cat and the circumstances, I’ll sometimes stare down the opposing cat, sometimes hiss at them, sometimes just observe and not interfere. I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing or not tbh.

HOWEVER…!
This is anecdotal, and I’d never suggest it as policy for anyone else. It’s just the way things are for me.

If I had more than one cat living here I’d probably keep a tray indoors. It just don’t seem necessary for Cat.

Yeah he's not too bad ta - well not blocked at least. He still has some blood in his urine sometimes (and it is blood, I took a sample and put it in the fridge and it separated, if it was discolouration that wouldn't have happened), and is weeing mostly on a puppy pad on my lap because it must be a bit painful and he wants comfort (he wasn't doing any of this behavioural stuff yesterday).

I meanwhile have been battling with the vet appointment booking system, which makes absolutely zero sense to me and lack of ability to plan ahead by even as little as 12 hours due to their same day appointment system is playing havoc with my autistic brain.

Hopefully will be able to get him seen tomorrow, but I don't know yet, so I'm in a state of decreased function/shutdown and haven't eaten tonight.
