Your daily cat and kitten news

Sad kitten, now known as Sophie Sadsacks and her mother Macey are getting along better now she is the only kitten left in the house. Although her mother still may have some adjustments to undertake! :D

Check out all those wonderful scratching posts! 🤣

Any insurance recommendations?

Getting round to the admin gradually, having finally settled on a name. I've registered her chip as Carrie Chapman Catt as was my original plan, because she does respond a bit to Carrie/Kerry, and nice though some of the other possibilities were there wasn't any reason for them.

I can live with people thinking it's for Carrie Fisher/Bradshaw.

A friend's son suggested Little Miss Kitty Fantastico which I think I'll keep as a secondary name. I was tempted to register her as that just to hear the vet calling it out in the waiting room.

Carrie Chapman Catt's Wikipedia has a worryingly long section on her views on race but thankfully it has a happy ending.
Were with animal friends who did pay out
Recently changed to Sainsbury's, not totally sure why tbh!

Big thanks to Mrs Voltz (izz) for painting whilst I did the finishing touches to a cat pen at the charity I volunteer at

In the one area they've now got the main room, a close'off'able second room with cat flap connection. A further two smaller pens in the main room. Which means that there's home for 13+ feral'ish kittens arriving today with more in the offing. They are able to house them all in the same room but if any get too fiesty they can be separated but kept together until things settle down

Part of me wants to post pictures as and when but the quality of my construction is far from good and I don't want to get too attached to the kittens in case... well, yunno... "things" start happening

General consensus re: the last kitten issue was most likely "parvo" or rather the vaccine they were given and their general immune weakness

Vet has decided that in future to give an initial smaller injection to get the immune system starting to work then follow up with a further two vaccinations in, I'm led to believe, quickish succession. These kittens are probably a bit young but we've got to try something as at the moment the influx of cats and kittens is relentless

The other day we were contacted by a Vet with a cat wanting to know if we could take a cat, like, Now otherwise it would be pts they weren't prepared to give any more time and this was at mid afternoon they wanted it gone by close of play. We took the cat

Liked but not for the kittens dying.
Does vet think the vaccine triggered an over reactive immune response?
That's pretty scary.

Hope the new kittens will survive.

If anything, the reverse

Because the parents most likely hadn't had any vaccinations there's a chance that any infection came through the mothers

They were, I think, too young for the vaccination but once they started dying what have you got to lose. But banging in a full dose maybe was too much for them

This really is a learning as you go

It sounds like they haven't got a clue but you couldn't be further from the truth. It's done in consultation with the vet

This is an ongoing problem

There was a colony of dumped cats (thanks Covid) that hadn't been sterilised or injected or anything so inbreeding just was a thing and we had, god I don't know, 20-30 cats and kittens over a period of time. Some lived, most didn't. Some were rehomed. I like to think that this colony has been sorted but there's others.

This current lot is coming from a farm I believe. There's still several pregnant queen's that for one reason or another we've not got yet. But the speed after having a litter to getting pregnant with another litter is unbelievable. So there a vanishingly small time window to halt the problem

As for the life expectancy of this current new batch... shrugs... I'll be surprised / delighted if half of them make it

And that's another problem, it's this charity's policy to not rehome a kitten until its around 6 months old to ensure that they're chipped (now a legal requirement) fully injected and most importantly of all, sterilised. As despite previously supplying a voucher for the procedure to be done for, basically free, people can't be bothered and we've had super young cats returned because they weren't done as promised and were pregnant and they weren't wanted any more. Makes my blood boil. This is not a national charity, it only started just over a year ago and they've pretty much permanently got over 100 animals they're caring for

It's so interesting to observe the deepening levels of relaxation. Today Carrie has been doing all sorts of normal cat things that I hadn't realised were missing. Weaving round my legs while I'm getting her breakfast. Sitting in the middle of the floor washing with one leg in the air.

Currently she's properly asleep curled up on the window ledge, not keeping an eye on everything.

Breakfast got a bit cozy this morning:

:D
The black cat on the right? Is it a Maine Coon? I've been feeding this gorgeous girl (I think it's a girl haven't tried to look yet) for a couple of weeks as she'd been crying for a few days before that. Abandoned? I still haven't figured it out. She's super friendly, in incredibly good condition, and she looks very young (probably under a. year old). And she looks like the one on the right.

Given how friendly she is and the great condition of her coat, it's a recent thing, I couldn't feel a microchip, but doesn't mean isn't there. I'm waiting to see what to do next. She already coming to my door everyday waiting for food and comes running when I call her...

I had decided not to have any other cats after our Rusty goes (she's 13 years old) but if a cats adopts me I can't turn her away. Rusty was the same. A stray. Who then had 7 kittens!!! Rusty was a lot more willing to come in, wheras Precious (my gd named her that) just hisses at Rusty quite agressively and won't stay in the house any longer than necessary. Rusty just moved in once she was invited and never left :D. (Even though there was another cat in the house already).

I guess I'm just waiting in case her owners went on holiday?

You won't feel a microchip, it's inserted under the skin. Best bet is to take her to a vet and get them to scan her. She is lovely, I hope you find out what the score is with her!

cats protection have more on what to do when the cat distribution network delivers an unexpected kitty

she might be abandoned

she might have got too far away from home to get back

there might be something going on at home (new baby, building work) and she's not happy about it

she might be a time-share kitty

That looks like somebody's cat visiting one of its homes.

I think when they scratch on things in peoples' gardens or near their door it is the kitty equivalent of "hobo signs" for cats that like to have more than one stop-off point on their travels.
"This one gives treats without expecting affection"
"Will feed in return for a cuddle"
"Plenty of mice here"
"Will get chased away from flower beds here"
