Your daily cat and kitten news

It's in direct conflict with my feeling that I want to actively choose this one, as the others just happened along.
I know they do it because they think the older ones, or not so cute ones will be overlooked, but that doesn't help anyone to make a decision - it could be that an older one or a not so cute one will be perfect for someone, but I feel both human and cat have to make that decision together if that makes any sort of sense.

I mean Sonic chose me, Jasper my parrot chose me, Radar chose N - ofc we were the ones with power to decide in those situations, but they made their feelings clear and they were excellent pets as a result (well Radar was a massive pain in the arse - and the toes, and the ankles, but he was still great).

So because Jakey has been a bit off his food, I thought to switch him to Hills K/D instead of Royal Canin Renal - both wet foods.
I picked up a box of 12 pouches of Hills on Saturday and he scoffed his way through 2 pouches of the stuff on Saturday night.
Sunday he decided he's not eating that any more.

It's really stressful, he's always been well into his food, he was very food aggressive when younger and we had to separate him from the others at mealtimes so he didn't eat his own then bully them off their food and scoff theirs too.

On the plus side, he has Sunday evening and early Monday morning eaten some of his Royal Canin Renal wet, OMG Jakey what am I going to do with you? You are doing my head in sweetheart. xx

I've always thought cos he's so food oriented that if he went off his grub it would be a big signal to me - but he seems happy otherwise, and he's not stopped eating, just eating less and being less enthusiastic. I'm monitoring the situation.

Cat seems to have found the mouse motherlode. Bringing me rodents day and night, almost every day. Lord knows how many he’s eating before bringing me the surplus.

Is it mouse season?

yes !
at least the ones around here seem to be staying outside, for the time being.

also peak baby bird season.

our tripod cat seems to have decided that hunting anything other than her toys is a waste of energy ...

That reminds me, there's a headless baby mouse I need to deal with on the front step. I think they've learned to kill birds away from my sphere of influence :/

In heat waves of yesteryear I used to lie in fear at night, knowing that any tiny twitch of the toes would result in them being mauled.

That was the old cat though, and new one couldn't be more passive. I felt him mount the bed as I tried to get to sleep last night, and heard his very loud purr approach my head. He then went down to the feet, and simply rubbed his nose affectionately on them instead.

I've started wondering what he was like as a kitten, when he had to compete with his brothers and sisters. He's so unevil now I can only think he was at the back of the queue for attention from their mum.

He was probably her favourite if he was quiet and sweet :D
Little known cat fact - sometimes mother cats chew the whiskers off their favourite kitten so they can't find their way around so easily and stay close to her!

Sorry, I don’t have a picture of a cat but I don’t know where else to put this.
Yesterday, I watched a lovely film set in Istanbul. There are lots of cats in it. Not because it’s a film about cats. It’s not. The cats in are incidental. They just seem to be an incidental part of life in Istanbul in a way so unlike the UK.
There was a brief unimportant moment in the film in which a cat just unfussily hopped into a total stranger’s lap and instantly relaxed and curled up to sleep.
In that moment, I began making rash plans to ditch everything and move to Istanbul.

Egypt was also excellent for random cats when I was there - long time ago now but I doubt that has changed much.
Sitting in a Cairo restaurant with cats strolling about and availing themselves of a bowl of scraps or a diner's lap was a regular feature :)

In the video game Assassin’s Creed Origins, which is set in Ancient Egypt, if you stand in any human settlement for long enough, cats start gathering and rubbing up against your shins

Istanbul is the cat Mecca. Or Meccat, I suppose. The film set there that is all about cats is so beautiful.
I think I’ve seen the cat one. There’s a great dog one too called Stray.
IIRC there is some ancient medieval law in Istanbul that forbids culling stray cats and dogs

I encountered a cat like that who used to hang out at Warminster railway station (he apparently had 'owners' who lived down the road) - the one time I went there, noticed a waiting passenger going the other way on a platform seat with a cat in their lap, which i thought was a bit unusual for someone travelling with a kitty.

when i went home, he was waiting outside - apparently he just liked hanging around at the station and accosting people for a fuss.

he's no longer with us, though - this was some years ago.

Further to this, one of the places I ate a couple of times was Felfela, there were cats not just at ground level, but also roaming around above along the rafters and overhead platforms.
I hope it is still the case that cats are treated well, I never saw one that looked hungry or scruffy, there seem to be a lot of community cats that everyone feeds and looks after.

(Felfela restaurant, Cairo - not my photo but imagine cats roaming around in the rafters while you eat a bowl of foul mudammas with fried onions and hard boiled egg)

Just posting here on the offchance anyone in London wants, or knows someone who may want, any urinary perscription cat food.

I've got:
8 750g bags of dry Purina One Urinary Health,
24 Hills perscription c/d wet pouches,
24 cans of Hills perscription c/d multistress

Tried a local charity, but they didn't come back to me... I don't think the larger ones take food.

Isn't it from the days of the Black Death or some similar plague?

Istanbul (or Stamboul & Pera as was) worked out that the cats and dogs of the city kept down the rat population, which meant they escaped the worst of it. Whilst most other places blamed their cats in particular for being evil spirits who spread it; so promptly killed them en-masse and suffered far worse for it.

Cats have been seen as protectors of the city since then and supported for the collective good.

A work colleague in Tartu put up a small exhibition of her photos in the meeting hall. She'd visited the castle in Kuressaare and took a picture of a cat who was prowling the castle grounds and then came up to her on a bench and sat on her lap. Obviously she was stuck there until the cat decided to leave 🙃

Another colleague originally from Saaremaa came to look at the photos and said hey, that's my mum's cat! I know Estonia's a small place, but even so lol. Saaremaa is the country's biggest island and translated it means "island land". They're so creative, the Estonians :-D

I think i need to watch those films again as I’ve just done a cursory google and it seems stray cats have actually only recently been protected by law, since 2021
