Your daily cat and kitten news

I think I'd find a Siamese too clingy. I'd love a British Blue but I'm sure I can find a rescue cat who will satisfy me aesthetically.

I feel weird about articulating this despite the fact that there's a whole massive trade based on feline appearance and for that matter plenty of people select their human partners on the same basis.
I can't say ive spotted any British blues around in rescues.

There's Siamese in Penge though :D

OMG HE'S GORGEOUS!!!!

He's got a dark coat for a 1 year old Siam, but that's understandable if he's been outdoors, if his body temp was cooler for a while he would have darker fur.

WANT!!!!

Always distresses me how many are "no other pets". Which tends to be based on "when the cat came into the shelter and was under enormous stress, did not like other animals".

Like yeah, and my cat won't be happy. For like two weeks until he gets used to it.

Croydon Animal Samaritans are the org who won't rehome a male cat with me. The cat they turned me down for was a British Blue. The Cats Protection have two in Bromley also but they're a middle-aged pair which leaves life looking expensive in 5-10 years time.

You probably already know about this but just in case you don't ,have you tried Catchat.org who list all the cat rescues in your area? They often have a lot of independent ones on there.

Hm, they have Kerry who def looks like she could use some TLC. I'd like a rough idea of age though.
WAR turned us down when we called to enquire when we were looking for a cat. They are on my "pissfingers" list but that was a few years back and they are posting a lot about being over-run so you might have more luck.
(I like Aretha on their website - not a siamese or a British blue but she is super beautiful)

I went to the local cat refuge. Picked out a cat. Called her Sasha. Had to wait a month until they got her sterilised. After a month I called back. Hey where's my cat? Oh, we destroyed her yesterday. She had FIV. Our policy is to euthanise all cats with FIV.

They never even told me. Plus she would have been fine at home with me. Anyway, I told them what I thought of their actions, they didn't care, and I looked to Facebook for a local foster service. As is always the case, went looking for one and ended up with two. My special cat when I was a boy was Jill, a long-haired tortie. But yeah, it's best not to try to "repeat" types of cat. I thought I'd bond more with Sammy the long-haired black and white, but it turned out it's Tabs the grey Tabby who is my little shadow.

Tabs is so smart and quick. Sammy is an adorable idiot. She stands still with the cogs whirring in her mind as she tries to make a decision. They both deserve the greatest accolade a cat can get: "cheeky".

Hm, they give you a choice of West London or East London (do they not know there is a river?) and the adoption listings, like the British Shorthair "rehoming" Facebook group, are overrun with breeder spam

I am so very sorry about Sasha though, FIV is no reason to euthanise a cat if they have a good home to go to, and you already said yes, I feel awful for poor Sasha, she'd have been fine with you with appropriate care and medication.

Best wishes for Tabs and Sammy though, they look like they've settled right in. :)

We got Donut and Vivian from Wallington Animal Rescue. They were overrun with kittens then (pre-covid), I can only imagine what it's like now.
At the time none of the local rescues wanted to let us have a cat as they all seemed to believe that cats and children are incompatible (the number of times I went on the Battersea website and ticked "can live with children" and watched all the cats vanish from the page makes me wonder sometimes if they actually want to rehome the animals).
A friend in Wimbledon mentioned her neighbour's cat had kittens so we went down that route instead.

This is why we went the way we did, we tried rescues first but fell at the first hurdle (no direct access to outdoors) and then ended up getting Radar from an "oops" litter, then bought Sonic from an ethical breeder, who then gave us Jakey a year later when he was in need of a new home.
Worked out great for us tbh, not so great for the cats in the shelter that we could have given a good home to though, I hope it all worked out ok for them too.

The lady from Charity B told me that FIV cats don't have to be indoors because most cats have FIV now but only some have symptoms of it.

I'm going to see a black floof of theirs tomorrow. Well, slightly floofy.
What????

The Blue Cross reckon between 2 to 5% of feral cats in the UK are infected with FIV (dated 2023).
That is a massive discrepancy, I'd query that.

Also the reason to keep them indoors is not to prevent spread of FIV, it's to keep an FIV cat from being exposed to other infections.

EDIT: Are you sure they didn't mishear FIV as something else? Because what they have told you is bollocks, sorry.
Maybe they thought you asked about FIP, and gave you information about FCoV which can lead to FIP, which would seem to be more in line with the information they've given you.
