Re. bells, I don't think a kill/capture is preceded by a lot of movement immediately beforehand. They'll lie in wait for as long as it takes, and pounce so quickly that even if the victim does hear the bell they won't have time to react.

The girls will miss the scaffolding when its eventually taken down

Unfortunately (for the girls) the scaffolding came down on Saturday morning....

Yes, they are ambush predators so bells are pretty useless.

I also found bells useless. The kill rate didn't decline at all, and it made the cats more annoying to us at night. I really love birds and am dreading spring :/

Thankfully the cats here mostly like to eat rabbits. Canelle has fully moved in with the people who've been staying in the loft above the barn over winter, so I haven't fed her in weeks and afaik they don't feed her either. She eats a LOT of rabbits though.

Vet called me to say everything fine with his blood tests, still waiting on urinalysis results as it could be he has a UTI (CKD cats are prone to them) but otherwise all is fine.
Just saw this (not visited the thread for a couple of days). So relieved for you and Jakey.
