Yet another US college gun slaughter - "at least 10" killed in Oregan shooting

My condolences to everyone affected by this incident.
Truly shocking, even on the limited information currently available.
An optimist would hope that these mass shootings would encourage some progress towards proper gun controls ... somehow, I don't expect that to happen - which is a shame, and makes these events somewhat inevitable.

They must have some kind of a collective blindness.

It just continues and they do nothing substantial to prevent it.

There is only one positive to it, which is that all the killing is slowly persuading my son that emigrating there when he is older might not be such a good idea.

Charlton Heston, 1923-2008

I think they're cold enough now.

Jesus. What kind of fucked up cunts are n that thread?

The internet sensationalists that are all about "if I'm behind a keyboard who honestly cares" bandwagon. Wonder if anyone feels responsible now.

Once again, the country will justify their keeping of gun laws with "its one of our ground laws" even though they are called amendments. which can uh, be amended.

The amendment process isn't easy though - it requires supermajorities in Congress, and 3/4ths of the States to ratify, I think.

The practicalities of disarmament are another gigantic complication on top of that.

It's a settled thing, the US is a country where weapons are easily obtained. Varies from state to state I suppose, but there's no border controls so whatever.

CNN reporters right now are trying to JUSTIFY what these social media users were saying.

"Some people say dumb stuff, and we sometimes respond like yeah do it"

Maybe getting a silly tattoo, or a pet. Not a fucking shooting.

I've recently heard the suggestion that we could require gun owners to carry liability insurance. The theory is that it would raise the cost of gun ownership beyond where you could own a lot of them, but wouldn't actually infringe on the right to own one.

Its a difficult area, and something which sadly Obama doesn't entirely have control over himself. The gun society lobbyists often shoot down attempts to make it tougher to obtain guns.

The President doesn't have anything much of a legislative say in constitutional amendments - there's no veto, for example. He can use his political weight, of course, but it's a Congress and States deal.

It's a stale argument. There are more guns than people and they ain't going anywhere anytime soon. These shootings will continue and only the families care. They accept 30,000 gun deaths a year as the price of 'freedom'.

It's their country, where I lived for a while, but I wouldn't now.

If there is anything to be done, it'll have to be something indirect. I've heard suggestions about limiting ammunition in some way, but that'll only create an easily filled black market.
