Will you Make Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday?

In Australia we call Shrove Tuesday Pancake Tuesday because people generally make pancakes. Rather than serve the pancakes with Maple Syrup, for Shrove Tuesday they are served with powdered sugar and lemon juice.

Growing up in the US we called the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras). No pancakes were served in my memory but feasts were common before the start of Lent. Generally people try to emulate the New Orleans Mardi Gras with Cajun food.

What is the custom in the UK? Do different parts (Wales, Scotland, N Ireland, England) have customs regarding Shrove Tuesday in common? What is your personal custom?

I hope to be doing pancakes. usually forget. :(

The UK is shrove tuesday (pancake day) with lemon and sugar. Unless everyone else does it differently but I've also got my info from Blue Peter.

While growing up my family did savoury pancakes as well. with erm, cheese or cheese and ham. Now I do cheese, sweetcorn and spinach. But sugar and lemon pudding ones. Or squirty cream and chocolate sauce. :hmm:

Always do pancakes. I love it. Sugar and lemon is the default classic. though we usually have an all pancake dinner of savoury then sweet.

Pancakes are great ! Yes , I'll be making them on pancake day.

I'm from the North-East &we also have an ancient local football game that's played every year on Shrove Tuesday ---- but I won't be going home for it.

I got a big bottle of real maple syrup from Aldi for £3.50 today! Going to get lemons and eggs sometime at the weekend. I love pancake day:)

It's the same in UK, will probably do some.

Oh yes!

Delia's recipe with the melted butter in the batter, cos it makes fabulous thin, crispy pancakes.

Savoury filling of ragu and grated cheese and of course lemon and sugar for afters.

Maybe some banana, chocolate and cream ones too. :hmm:

Mmmmmm pancakes! Yes, we'll be making them. Lemon and sugar for me, jam or chocolate sauce for the kids.

I thought it was just in the UK that we munch our way through stodgy pancakes while the rest of the world are getting trollied in fancy dress and shagging each other senseless. It's reassuring to know that Australians are just as boring as us and in exactly the same way.
