Why the Guardian is going down the pan!

lol. My daughter used to live in Leith. My sister still does. I used to love it, but that article has nearly made me hate it. Which isn’t fair on Leithers. It’s basically people venturing out of Stockbridge and Comely Bank and trying to be “edgy” for an evening. If it’s a light evening in summer.

With the disclaimer that I have never been to Leith, that article contains every Guardian travel bingo buzzword:
'Natural' wines
Artisan bakery
Sustainable café
Food blogger
Craft breweries
Cultural hub

Best of all are 'Edinburgh's La Rambla' and the area having one of the highest numbers of Remain votes.

I mean I always check which way a place voted in the 2016 referendum before going anywhere - doesn't everyone?
the whole of Scotland was 2/3 remain votes, I don't know why the Author is acting like this is news

I lived in Leith for a long time, that article did it no favours at all. I guess the twats who previously wouldn't be seen outside the city centre during the festival have now discovered that Leith is not the Leith of trainspotting.

I only really know Leith from the (superb) McLevy detective series which really is The Leith Poleith dithmitheth uth.

Where's the mention of Tattie Shaw's for example, which is a tiny yet amazing grocers that has managed to survive in spite of all the tram works upheavals and the pandemic?

And how much 'affordable' housing is in the shrubhill development, really? Is it truly affordable or did the developers just pay their way out of the requirement? Yes, I know the council won't say any of this

What about mentioning the Ship on the Shore or the Kings Earl, two longstanding establishments on the Leith Shore, both with excellent food and drink?

The whole article fails to capture the true nature of the area, instead painting it as some spot just for tourists.

this bit was classic

I’ve come to explore this Edinburgh district ahead of the new tramline launching on Wednesday. Trams opened connecting the city centre to Edinburgh airport back in 2014, with the last stop at York Place. It’s taken the best part of a decade for the line to forge down Leith Walk into Leith proper and on to the waterfront at Newhaven. It’s a run of just 2.91 miles and eight new stops – but its arrival brings palpable hope.

But how did he get around? 🤔
This is the best bit:

'But without a car, would I really be a man? “A man ain’t a man with a ticket in his hand,” counselled the mod revival band the Merton Parkas, in their 1979 hit You Need Wheels. Margaret Thatcher is supposed to have said: “If a man finds himself a passenger on a bus having attained the age of 26, he can count himself a failure in life.” I was nearly double that age, at a time of life when I should have been sublimating my fear of death with a manual Maserati, rather than topping up my Oyster card or riding my bike.'

it wasn't her but one of her advisors if I remember my thatcher lore correctly

Actually, it was someone else entirely, nothing to do with Thatcher. But hey, myths. No Seaman Staines either.

Also, the area of Leith hasn't physically fucking moved, it's always been a few stops from the city centre. They're acting like it's some magical new place that didn't exist before. Twats.
Been away 6 years and it has changed a bit along the same trend...its all 'sustainable' cafes now favorite caff gone, less pubs more bars, annoyingly the 22's gone and there are noticeably more key safes on doors. But it's still the same place. And yep no one ever says Feaster road

Whacked in a load of student accommodation a while back which stole the edge of hip off Stockbridge. Not been edgy edgy for a decade or so Pilton for that.

Changed enough I picked a different bit to live in

I was looking forward to not hearing about Boris Johnson again now that he had resigned but the Guardian seems to be full of "Boris Johnson now properly resigns" and "Top Tories say how we should stop caring about Boris Johnson". I mean I don't want to agree with Top Tories as such but I really don't need a new story every day about how he's now officially returned his official MP's slippers.
