So many films seem to get remade after a while, some more successfully than others.
However musical films don't.
Why no remakes of West Side Story, Oliver! etc
Little Shop of Horrors and Hairspray were both filmed previously, but not as musicals but the musical films were based on stage musicals.Little Shop Of Horrors is a remake, I think
And Hairspray definitely, though it was a shit remake - oh wait that was a musical remake, rather than a remake of a musical, wasn't it?
Fame was a musical remake of a musical film but had not previously been a musical.Fame was a musical remake of a musical film of a musical I think
Although there is at least one prominent one out at the moment, they don't tend to release musicals much anymore so I would guess this may be the main reason currently. Orang Utan mentioned a couple of recent ones in Fame and Footloose. Annie is another one of recent times. So many films seem to get remade after a while, some more successfully than others.

Just be grateful that they haven't been.
Those are proper musicals. Not ALW or this warbly shit they have now.My mum has a lot to answer for she compulsively made me watch musicals with her when i was little. For some unfortunate reason they have ALL stuck with me & I know the words to every.single.song. seven brides for seven brothers, Oklahoma, brigadoon, fiddler on the roof. sound of music, oliver, west side story, the king and i, carousel, south pacific.... The list is endless and today, almost 50 years later it is relentless. I'll suddenly find myself singing one, just like that, out of the blue! its some sort of disorder i swear
The new film is an adaptation of the stage adaptation of the cartoon, it's got all the songs from the original film plus new ones from the stage version. The live action remake of Beauty and the Beast due to be released this year will be a musical. (But I'm not clear how many of the songs will be from the cartoon version).
True. And a significant proportion of "originals" are already film versions of successful musicals.Maybe because they are 'remade' on stage regularly?
